About the role
This announcement is for the position of Bridge Maintenance Engineer in the SDDOT Office of Bridge Design. The Bridge Maintenance Engineer supervises a design squad consisting of 6 engineers and one CAD technician and is responsible for maintaining the SDDOT’s bridge network.
Responsibilities
- Supervision of assigned engineering activities and personnel
- Managing the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) program for the State of South Dakota
- Managing the National Tunnel Inspection Standards (NTIS) program for the State of South Dakota
- Effectively planning & programming structure maintenance projects in the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program
- Ensuring structure repair and rehabilitation projects are designed efficiently to provide safe and cost effective structure plans for State highway construction projects
- Supervision of the SDDOT Bridge Maintenance Section
- Establishing uniform rehabilitation/design procedures and office practices
- Ensuring state bridge inspection is conducted in accordance with the NBIS, load rating and inventory reporting is in accordance with the NBIS
- Preliminary engineering project management
- Maintenance design training coordination
- Plan reviews
- Bridge construction troubleshooting assistance
- Assisting the Chief Bridge Engineer as needed
Requirements
- Successful completion of all structural engineering related college coursework as would be required of a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering
- Extensive bridge engineering/design/maintenance experience
- Engineering managerial (supervisory) experience
- Professional Engineer Registration in the State of South Dakota
- As the NBIS Program Manager for the State of South Dakota, this position is required by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to be a registered Professional Engineer or have a minimum of ten years bridge inspection experience and have completed an FHWA-approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course
- As the NTIS Program Manager for the State of South Dakota, this position is required by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to be a registered Professional Engineer or have a minimum of ten years bridge or tunnel inspection experience and have completed an FHWA-approved comprehensive tunnel inspection training course

Pay
$101,891.27 - $119,872.08, depending on experience
Schedule
Full-time position with the Department of Transportation. Generally 8 hour work days Monday-Friday. In-state travel is required for structure site inspections (average 1 or 2 times a month with occasional overnight stays as necessary for long distance and/or multi-day work trips). Some out-of-state travel is also typical of this position (1 - 2 times/year).
