About the role

The Bridge Inspection Transportation Worker is responsible for daily inspection tasks, including the operation of equipment, to help ensure TDOT's infrastructure is safe for all users. The position assists with the inspection processes for bridges, culverts, and other structures, ensuring thorough and accurate assessments are conducted.

Responsibilities

  • Identify deterioration and deficiencies during inspection projects.
  • Support the interpretation of project-specific procedures, plans, and specifications.
  • Ensure activities align with state and federal laws.
  • Communicate findings clearly and support the input of data into the Bridge Management System.
  • Emphasize safety as a priority.
  • Help the public during emergency situations.
  • Avoid hazards, assess risks, and help mitigate safety issues.
  • Apply TDOT Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Policies and MUTCD to establish inspection work zones.
  • Inspect and evaluate the quality of bridge assets.
  • Track data related to employee time, equipment, structural conditions, and material usage.
  • Operate and maintain TDOT equipment.
  • Provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Work well with other teams, listen carefully, respond quickly to requests, keep accurate records, and communicate clearly.
  • Participate in the Transportation Worker Proficiency Program.
  • Investigate complaints and emergency scenarios.
  • Document activities and information during roadside operations, inspections, and other emergency situations.
  • Remain current on training related to emergency operations.
  • Remain current on national best practices related to NBIS, SNBI, BIRM, and inspection standards.
  • Routinely collaborate with project teams.
  • Assist in assessing bridge conditions for rehabilitation.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development diploma.
  • Transportation Worker 1: Entry level, no prerequisites other than High School Education or equivalent.
  • Transportation Worker 2: Must have successfully completed the required skills and competency elements of the Transportation Worker 1 level.
  • Transportation Worker 3: Must have successfully completed the required skills and competency elements at the Transportation Worker 2 level.
