Bridge Engineer

About the role

Neel‑Schaffer, an Engineering News‑Record Top 180 Design firm with offices in nine states, is seeking a Bridge Engineer to join its growing transportation structures team in Jackson, Mississippi. The position involves active participation in the design and delivery of bridge projects—including new bridge design, rehabilitation, widening, and related transportation structures—within a collaborative regional bridge team serving the Southeast.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural analysis and design development for bridges, culverts, and retaining structures.
• Produce bridge plans, layouts, and shop drawings using MicroStation and OpenBridge.
• Conduct load rating and bridge analysis using tools such as LEAP Bridge Steel, CSI Bridge, AASHTOWare Bridge Design and Rating, or comparable software.
• Review shop drawings and ensure quality control throughout project phases.
• Coordinate with project teams, clients, and multidisciplinary engineers and technicians.
• Apply MDOT design standards and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications to project deliverables.
• Contribute to technical writing, project documentation, and client communications.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
• Licensed Professional Engineer in Mississippi or ability to obtain licensure within one year.
• At least 5 years of progressive bridge/structural design experience.
• Valid driver’s license.

Skills and Qualifications

• Strong verbal communication, technical writing, and analytical abilities.
• Proficiency in MicroStation and OpenBridge for bridge layout, modeling, and plan production.
• Experience with bridge analysis, design, and load rating software (LEAP Bridge Steel, CSI Bridge, AASHTOWare Bridge Design and Rating, or similar).
• Working knowledge of MDOT design standards and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
• Experience delivering bridge projects for MDOT and/or other state DOT clients.
