Bridge Engineer
About the role
This Bridge Engineer role focuses on the structural analysis and design of bridge and transportation structures, from preliminary concepts through final construction documents. You will prepare detailed design plans, calculations, specifications, and cost estimates while ensuring all work complies with applicable codes and standards. The position involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, participation in client meetings, and occasional site visits to support inspections and project delivery. You will apply advanced structural engineering software and methodologies to deliver safe, efficient, and constructible bridge designs, while working both independently and as part of a coordinated project team.
Responsibilities
- Perform structural analysis and design for bridge and transportation structures using appropriate engineering methods and tools.
- Prepare preliminary and final design plans, including detailed drawings, structural calculations, and technical specifications.
- Develop cost estimates for bridge and transportation projects and assist in the preparation of contract documents.
- Ensure all designs comply with applicable bridge design codes, standards, and state transportation guidelines.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including roadway, geotechnical, and construction professionals, to support integrated project delivery.
- Participate in client meetings to present design concepts, discuss project requirements, and support effective communication.
- Conduct site visits and field inspections as needed to assess existing conditions, verify design assumptions, and support construction activities.
- Perform load calculations and contribute to load rating analyses to verify structural capacity and performance.
- Prepare clear, well-organized engineering documentation, reports, and design narratives to support project approvals and construction.
- Manage assigned tasks, meet project deadlines, and maintain high standards of quality and accuracy in all deliverables.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
- At least 5 years of bridge or structural design experience.
- Demonstrated experience preparing bridge design plans and structural calculations.
- Strong background in civil engineering, structural engineering, and structural design for bridge and transportation projects.
- Proficiency with structural analysis and design software such as SAP2000 and RISA 3D.
- Experience performing load calculations for bridge and structural systems.
- Familiarity with state transportation department bridge design standards and guidelines.
- Ability to ensure designs meet applicable bridge and transportation codes and standards.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a project-driven environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to support coordination with project teams and clients.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Connecticut, or the ability to obtain one, preferred.
- Experience with load ratings for bridges is a plus.
- Experience preparing detailed contract documents for bridge and transportation projects.
- Familiarity with transportation and bridge design practices at the state level.
- Experience participating in client meetings and supporting project communication.
- Experience conducting site visits and field inspections for bridge or structural projects.
Work Environment
This role operates in a professional engineering environment that combines office-based design work with occasional field visits. In the office, you will use structural analysis and design software such as SAP2000 and RISA 3D, along with standard engineering tools, to develop bridge and transportation design documents. Work typically follows standard business hours, with flexibility based on project deadlines and coordination needs. Field work may involve visiting active or existing bridge sites to perform inspections, verify conditions, and support construction activities, which can include working outdoors and navigating uneven terrain. The position emphasizes collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, regular communication with clients and project partners, and a culture that values technical excellence, safety, and high-quality project delivery.
Job Type & Location
This is a Permanent position based out of Norwalk, CT.
Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $100,000.00 - $135,000.00/yr. Offers excellent benefits, including a 401(k) plan, ESOP, medical/dental/vision plans, paid time off, and more.
