About the Role
Work with children and adults in the corps and community to plan and implement a music program that includes teaching theory, performance skills, music, and values.
Responsibilities
- Lead music and other arts programs as assigned within the corps.
- Develop and implement weekly lesson plans and appropriate curriculum for music classes.
- Plan and attend all recitals at the corps and prepare music programs for the end-of-school-year concert.
- Encourage participants to work toward goals and a sense of accomplishment in developing musical abilities.
- Help participants discover and develop skills and talents to heighten self-esteem, increase school/program pride, and involve them in positive activities.
- Organize musical performances and community activities that increase public understanding of the corps’ mission.
- Encourage participation in summer camps to further develop talents and support spiritual decisions.
- Assist in planning participation for campers in summer camping programs, including divisional music camp and summer music day camps.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in music preferred, or extensive experience teaching music.
- Minimum of two years’ experience working with children and/or adults in music.
- Performance experience preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency in music theory and a primary instrument.
- Personal knowledge of music, including performance, education, and theory.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills.
- Ability to work as a team player, self-starter, and follow through with assignments.
- Positive attitude and flexibility in changing job situations or priorities.
- Strong commitment to support and promote the mission of The Salvation Army.
- Valid driver’s license from your state of residence; must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on business.
Physical Requirements
- Light physical work periodically to perform essential functions, including using instruments and equipment needed in a music program.
- Frequent use of standard office equipment and a PC.
- Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals to perform essential functions.
Working Conditions
- Program environment with moderate to high noise levels.
- Occasional travel may be required.
