Brand Designer
Blacksmith builds infrastructure to run CI workloads at scale. Our first product accelerates GitHub Actions by operating a global fleet of bare-metal machines, orchestrating tens of millions of Firecracker VMs weekly for 5,000+ companies and reaching ~$50M in ARR in 2.5 years. We manage thousands of bare-metal servers across multiple regions, schedule 100k+ concurrent vCPUs, and run a petabyte-scale Ceph cluster in-house. Backed by $58.5M from Seed to Series B (led by GV and Peak XV), we’re extending our CI platform to power agent sandboxes and a background coding agent.
About the role
As our first in-house Brand Designer, you’ll inherit and evolve a well-established brand system—one that developers already love. You’ll own how Blacksmith looks and sounds across every touchpoint: website, social, events, decks, swag, and more. Your work will translate complex technical concepts into visuals that engage and build credibility with engineers, while maintaining a flexible system that scales across multiple product lines. You’ll collaborate directly with founders and engineering to craft launch narratives, from storytelling to assets for Hacker News, X, and our blog. This role is about raising the bar on craft, shipping fast, and iterating in public—treating the brand as something that evolves alongside the product.
Responsibilities
- Own Blacksmith’s visual and verbal identity across all surfaces: website, social media, events, presentations, swag, and beyond.
- Translate complex technical concepts into compelling visuals that resonate with and earn trust from a developer audience.
- Build and maintain a flexible visual system that scales with our product roadmap, avoiding static guidelines that quickly become outdated.
- Collaborate with founders and engineering to shape launch narratives, from high-level storytelling to execution (e.g., Hacker News posts, X threads, blog assets).
- Ship quickly, iterate publicly, and treat the brand as a living entity that evolves with the product.
- Uphold high standards of craft while moving at speed, ensuring quality across all outputs.
Requirements
- 5+ years in a brand design role, preferably in developer tools, infrastructure, or complex B2B products.
- A portfolio demonstrating systems thinking and versatility across mediums: web, motion, print, and presentations, with strong typography and layout at its core.
- Experience building or meaningfully evolving a brand for a technical product—not just executing within an existing system.
- Ability to articulate design decisions persuasively and align engineers and founders around your vision.
- Comfort with ambiguity; a love for prototyping and exploring multiple options for every design choice.
- Expertise in leveraging agentic tools to expedite the design process.
- Maniacal attention to polish and an instinct for what earns trust with developers.
Benefits
- Medical, vision, and dental insurance.
- Competitive base salary + equity.
- 401k match.
- Unlimited PTO.
- Annual company offsite.
- Early-exercise stock options.
- 12 weeks fully paid parental leave (US).
