About the Role
This position involves teaching and coaching basketball at North High School, developing and maintaining a strong basketball program, and contributing to the overall sports program. The role requires motivation of student-athletes both on the court and in the classroom, as well as effective communication with stakeholders including administration, staff, students, and the booster club.
Responsibilities
- Sport Duties:
- Teach and coach young people in the fundamentals and techniques of basketball.
- Develop and maintain a competitive basketball program.
- Improve the program and overall sports program at North High School.
- Motivate student-athletes to excel academically and athletically.
- Communicate effectively with administration, staff, students, and the booster club.
- Support the strength and conditioning coordinator for proper conditioning and weight training.
- Provide supervision before, during, and after practices/matches.
- School Duties:
- Lead by example with high character and solid moral background.
- Promote other programs at North High School and encourage participation in additional activities.
- Work with Athletic Boosters in concession stands and attend one meeting per academic year.
- Feeder Programs:
- Assist in developing football programs at every age level.
- Assist at one coach's clinic and one youth camp per calendar year.
- Support the Davenport North High Athletic Boosters youth summer sports camp.
- Perform any additional duties assigned by the head coach or administration.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to sit, stand, speak, hear, see, and walk to carry out routine duties.
- Occasionally lift, move, or push items up to 50 lbs, such as assisting children or moving furniture.
- Supervise students in all types of weather.
- Meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
- Implement Crisis Prevention Intervention strategies, including physical restraint procedures and escorting.
Work Environment
- Noise level ranges from quiet to loud.
- Work may be indoors and/or outdoors, including non-air-conditioned rooms.
- Substance-free and fast-paced environment with constant contact with students, staff, or the public.
- Direct responsibility for the safety, well-being, and work output of students.
Qualifications
- Must hold a valid Iowa Coaching Authorization or Iowa Teaching License with Coaching Endorsement.
- Experience with competition/success at the state level is desired.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a proven record of building rapport with culturally diverse students.
