About the role

USBP is hiring immediately for full-time, career positions as Border Patrol Agents (BPA). Your prior law enforcement officer (LEO) experience may qualify you for higher-graded BPA opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Deterring illicit activity and enhancing national economic prosperity
  • Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws
  • Inspecting documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations
  • Preventing and apprehending aliens and smugglers of aliens at or near the borders
  • Maintaining surveillance from covert positions during night operations
  • Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry
  • Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways using various government assets

Qualifications

  • GL-9: One year of specialized experience performing duties such as physical searches, apprehending violators, and using firearms.
  • GS-11: One year of specialized experience performing duties such as utilizing intelligence information, leading investigations, and apprehending violators.

Benefits

  • Base Salary: GL-9/GS-11, $65,545 - $124,717 per year
  • Locality Pay: Varies by duty location
  • Overtime Pay: Up to 25%
  • Additional Incentives: Up to $60,000 in incentives for new hires, including up to $20,000 in recruitment incentives and up to $40,000 in retention incentives

Pay

  • Base Salary: GL-9/GS-11, $65,545 - $124,717 per year
  • Locality Pay: Varies by duty location
  • Overtime Pay: Up to 25%

Requirements

  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizen
  • Residency: Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
  • Age Restriction: Must be referred for selection to the Border Patrol Agent position before reaching their 40th birthday
  • Veterans’ Preference: Eligible for Veterans’ Recruitment Appointment (VRA)
  • Formal Training: Detailed to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy for approximately six months of intensive instruction
  • Languages: Ability to speak and read Spanish, as well as English
