Bookstore Sales Associate - Part Time

About the role

The Bookstore Sales Associate plays a crucial role in supporting The King Center's mission to empower people to create a just, humane, equitable, and peaceful world through Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Nonviolent philosophy and methodology.

Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service through friendly and courteous engagement with guests and visitors.
  • Communicate current product offerings, sales, and bookstore specials to guests.
  • Perform complex technical and clerical duties related to purchasing supplies and materials.
  • Read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a college level.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Operate a computer, cash register, and calculator.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population.
  • Perform physical labor including lifting and carrying large amounts of books by hand or with use of equipment.
  • Operate hand trucks, dollies, weight scales, postage machines, and hand tools.
  • Perform tasks such as performing complex technical and clerical duties related to purchasing supplies and materials; reading, writing, and performing mathematical calculations at a college level; meeting with the public tactfully and courteously; following oral and written instructions; operating a computer, cash register, and calculator; performing physical labor including the ability to lift and carry large amounts of books by hand or with use of equipment; operating hand trucks, dollies, weight scales, postage machines, and hand tools; maintaining cooperative working relationships; demonstrating sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required.
  • 2 or more years of retail experience.
  • Ability to compute rates and percentages and able to balance cash registers.
  • Understanding and knowledge of Dr. King’s teachings and nonviolent philosophy and methodology, including the Beloved Community.
  • Knowledge of the King Center’s founder, Coretta Scott King (My Life, My Love, My Legacy).
  • High energy, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude.
  • Familiarity with POS (point of sale) systems and ability to learn new technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule.
  • Ability to upsell.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience: Increasingly responsible experience in retail and/or shipping/receiving environment, preferably recent retail receiving experience. Previous bookstore experience preferred.

Skills

  • Ability to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking.
