About the role

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. Each Barnes & Noble Bookstore is the product of its bookselling team, and you will contribute to its success by welcoming customers, maintaining store presentation, and supporting efficient operations.

Responsibilities

• Welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and connecting readers with the right titles and products.
• Maintain the attractive presentation of the store and ensure its efficient running.
• Help unpack and shelve deliveries and tidy displays.
• Work registers in a quick and friendly manner, providing highly professional service.
• Use varied technology (registers, computers, tablets, programs, and other tools) comfortably and efficiently.
• Develop strong merchandising skills to maintain book presentation and store cleanliness.
• Develop effective visual merchandising skills for gifting, toys, and other product categories.
• Run a register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
• Support receiving and unpacking of deliveries and ensure efficient, accurate shelving.
• Find books and other products with ease and accuracy using personal knowledge, colleagues, BookMaster, and available information tools.
• Support the café team willingly and effectively when needed.
• Understand loss‑prevention procedures and de‑escalation techniques; identify theft, spot problematic behavior, and seek support.
• Perform physical activities including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and extensive walking.
• Work in other stores as needed to support the wider cluster.
• Build book knowledge across fiction, nonfiction, and children’s sections and use it to maintain sections, make recommendations, and support sales objectives (Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, pre‑orders, etc.).
• Develop expertise in Educational Toys and Games, Specialty Games, Hobby and Collectibles, music and movies, and Newsstand to maintain sections, backstock, and assist customers.
• Contribute to the success of key sales objectives, products, and new releases.
• Enjoy being a bookseller and strive to advance to Senior Bookseller as skills develop.

• Fill scheduling gaps when able, being flexible and responsive to store needs.
• Approach work with a positive and willing attitude, performing tasks with purpose and energy.
• Be supportive and considerate of colleagues, helping others and showing kindness.
• Always be cheerful with customers, going out of your way to help them.
• Show aptitude and willingness to learn new skills and acquire new knowledge in the store.
• Enjoy being a bookseller.
• Comply with all company policies and procedures.

Schedule

The store is open from early mornings to late evenings every day, including weekends and most holidays.
