About the role

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way, answer questions, and connect readers with the right titles and products. You also help maintain the store’s attractive presentation and ensure its efficient operation by unpacking and shelving deliveries, tidying displays, and operating registers.

Responsibilities

  • Greet customers cheerfully and assist them with purchases, recommendations, and inquiries.
  • Unpack, shelve, and organize deliveries to maintain store presentation.
  • Operate registers efficiently to provide quick and friendly service.
  • Develop and apply merchandising skills to maintain book and product displays.
  • Support receiving, unpacking, and accurate shelving of inventory.
  • Locate books and products using store tools, personal knowledge, or colleague assistance.
  • Assist the café team when needed.
  • Follow loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques.
  • Build expertise in fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, toys, games, collectibles, music, movies, and newsstand products.
  • Make effective book recommendations and support key sales initiatives (e.g., Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, preorders).
  • Collaborate with the team to maintain store cleanliness and operational efficiency.

Requirements

  • Reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts, including flexibility for early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Positive, willing, and energetic approach to tasks, with a strong work ethic.
  • Supportive and considerate attitude toward colleagues and customers.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to store needs.
  • Comfort with technology, including registers, computers, tablets, and store programs.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures.
