Assemble, inspect, and repair boilers, boiler tubes, pressure vessels, tanks, and vats in the field according to blueprint specifications.
Responsibilities
- Clean boilers and boiler furnaces.
- Inspect and repair boiler fittings, such as safety valves, regulators, automatic-control mechanisms, water columns, and auxiliary machines.
- Examine boilers, pressure vessels, tanks, or vats to locate defects, such as leaks, weak spots, or defective sections, for repair.
- Bolt or arc weld pressure vessel structures and parts together.
- Inspect assembled vessels or individual components, such as tubes, fittings, valves, controls, or auxiliary mechanisms, to locate defects.
- Repair or replace defective pressure vessel parts, such as safety valves or regulators, using torches, jacks, caulking hammers, power saws, threading dies, welding equipment, or metalworking machinery.
- Attach rigging and signal crane or hoist operators to lift heavy frame and plate sections or other parts into place.
- Lay out plate, sheet steel, or other heavy metal and mark bending and cutting lines.
- Install manholes, handholes, taps, tubes, valves, gauges, or feedwater connections in drums of water tube boilers.
- Study blueprints to determine locations, relationships, or dimensions of parts.
- Straighten or reshape bent pressure vessel plates or structural parts.
- Shape seams, joints, or irregular edges of pressure vessel sections or structural parts to attain specified fit.
- Position, align, and secure structural parts or related assemblies to boiler frames, tanks, or vats of pressure vessels.
- Shape or fabricate parts, such as stacks, uptakes, or chutes, to adapt pressure vessels, heat exchangers, or piping to premises.
- Install refractory bricks or other heat-resistant materials in fireboxes of pressure vessels.
- Clean and assemble large vessels in an on-site fabrication shop prior to installation to ensure proper fit.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 3-4 years of experience in the trade.
Skills
- Knowledge of boiler repairs, maintenance, and installation techniques.
- Ability to communicate with internal team and customers.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and written reference material.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve problems.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools.
Physical Demands
- Physically operate a variety of machinery and equipment, including electronic and diagnostic tools, recovery equipment, and plumbing equipment.
- Use body members to work, move, or carry objects or materials.
- Perform activities requiring stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, seeing, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently.
Work Environment
This job operates primarily alone and travels to different work sites each day. Work is typically indoors but may involve outdoor tasks in poor weather conditions. Vehicles serve as the base of operations. Work may occur in tight spaces.
