BOILER PLANT EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

About the Role

This position is for a Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic within the Public Works Directorate (PWD) Pennsylvania of NAVFAC Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic.

Responsibilities

• Use meters, gauges, and computer-generated data to determine adjustments or corrections necessary for proper boiler operations or changing load requirements.
• Adjust fuel feeds and volume and velocity of draft and other firebox variables to achieve maximum combustion efficiency with changing load demands.
• Serve as “operator-in-charge” of the complete plant on second and third shifts.
• Monitor and test the operation of power boiler systems to identify malfunctions and potential problems with equipment such as automatic controls, valves, piping, pumps, and related components.
• Perform preventative and scheduled maintenance on plant systems and equipment including boiler feed pumps, fuel oil pumps, air compressors, generators, boiler fixtures, combustion fans, and water treatment equipment.

Requirements

This position includes a Selective Placement Factor:

• Candidates must possess a valid fourth-class operator license using the National Association of Power Engineers criteria or its equivalent. This experience must be demonstrated in the resume.

Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated based on your level of knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies in the following job elements:

• Understanding of all phases of power boiler operations, including water treatment, fuel systems, steam generation, and pollution control.
• Understanding of combustion and heat transfer theories, water treatment procedures, and the entire steam distribution system.
• Understanding of routine maintenance and operational repairs.
• Understanding of installing, maintaining, and repairing a variety of complex steam and hot water equipment.
• Understanding of mechanical, electromechanical, and pneumatic principles, along with a working knowledge of electronics.
• Understanding of troubleshooting, repairing, and replacing defective components, using specialized test equipment to identify issues.
