Position Summary

The Board Chair provides visionary leadership to the Board of Directors and works in partnership with the CHERO to advance the mission of Apex Workforce & Talent Foundation. The Chair ensures effective governance, strategic oversight, and organizational sustainability. A critical responsibility is actively leading and supporting fundraising efforts to secure the financial resources needed to grow the Apex Talent Initiative Academy, expand programs, and increase community impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Governance

    • Preside over all Board meetings, set agendas, and ensure productive, mission-focused discussions.
    • Facilitate Board decision-making and maintain strong governance practices.
    • Lead the annual Board self-assessment and succession planning.
    • Serve as the primary liaison between the Board and the CHERO/Executive Team.
  • Strategic Direction

  • Guide the Board in setting and monitoring the organization’s strategic priorities.
  • Champion the growth of the Apex Talent Initiative Academy and related workforce development programs.
  • Ensure alignment between Board goals and organizational operations.
  • Fundraising & Resource Development (Key Emphasis)

    • Actively lead Board fundraising efforts and personally participate in securing major gifts, sponsorships, and donations.
    • Cultivate relationships with foundations, corporations, individual donors, and community partners to bring in sustainable funding.
    • Work with the CEO and Development/Fundraising Committee to meet annual revenue goals.
    • Represent the organization at key fundraising events and make direct asks when appropriate.
    • Help identify and secure corporate sponsorships, grant opportunities, and strategic partnerships that support Academy participants and program expansion.
  • External Representation

    • Serve as the official spokesperson for the Board.
    • Build and maintain high-level relationships with stakeholders, funders, elected officials, and community leaders.
    • Promote the organization’s mission and impact in public forums.
  • Board Development

    • Recruit, onboard, and mentor new Board members.
    • Ensure all Board members understand their fiduciary duties and actively contribute (including giving and getting financial support).

    Qualifications

    • Demonstrated leadership experience in nonprofit, business, or community organizations.
    • Strong track record in fundraising, donor cultivation, and resource development (required).
    • Passion for workforce development, education equity, talent pipelines, and nonprofit mission.
    • Excellent communication, collaboration, and strategic thinking skills.
    • High integrity, sound judgment, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    • Previous Board experience (preferred).

    Time Commitment

    • Attend monthly Board meetings (virtual/in-person hybrid).
    • Participate in quarterly strategic sessions and annual retreat.
    • Commit approximately 8–12 hours per month, including preparation, fundraising activities, and external representation.

    Compensation

    • Volunteer (unpaid).
