Safety and Equipment
- Safely and efficiently use blasting and cleaning techniques in the preparation of surfaces for coating.
- Abrases surfaces of metal or hard-composition objects to remove adhering scale, sand, paint, grease, tar, rust, and dirt, and to impart specified finish, using abrasive-blasting equipment.
- Shovels or pours abrasives, such as sand, grit, or shot of specified grade into machine hopper.
- Masks specified areas of object to protect from abrading action.
- Loads parts on racks in enclosed rooms, into tumbling barrels, or into cabinets.
- Turns valves on equipment to regulate pressure and composition of abrasive mixture flowing through nozzle or into tumbling barrel.
- Starts equipment that directs blast or flow of abrasive-laden compressed air, gas, or liquid over surface of parts.
- Manually directs nozzle over surface of large parts or inserts arms through glove-fitted cabinet openings and manipulates small parts under nozzle for specified interval.
- Act in accordance with applicable practices, policies, and procedures, when blasting.
- Must utilize appropriate personal protective equipment when blasting, as directed.
- Disassembles sandblasting equipment and cleans equipment, using solvent, wire brushes, and dry cloth.
- Maintain all equipment in good working condition.
Work Environment
- Work is conducted inside and outside during all-weather types.
- Temperatures will be variable according to season and specific work site.
- Tasks may involve moderate to heavy physical labor.
- Walking, climbing, standing, sitting, and lifting are required.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to work in cold and hot weather conditions some part of the time.
- Be able to grip, pull and push heavy objects.
- Ability to work with hands and perform routine lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Stand for extended periods of time.
