Birth Center Technician

Under the supervision of the RN, the Birth Center Technician assists in providing nursing care and preparing patients in the Surgery Department. Serves as a member of the sterile team in surgical procedures and performs clerical duties.

Responsibilities

• Provides patient care under the direction of the surgeon and registered nurse (RN).
• Protects patients and team members by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
• Sets up and maintains sterile field.
• Prepares the surgical suite and all equipment, supplies, and instruments needed for surgical procedures.
• Performs gowning, gloving, and draping for all surgical cases.
• Maintains focus and anticipates needs of physicians or providers during procedures.
• Performs counts in a systematic and organized manner, including appropriate follow-up for incorrect counts.
• Cleans operating room and equipment per established policies.
• Cleans and prepares surgical instruments for transportation to the decontamination area.
• Demonstrates competency in transporting or assisting in the transportation of patients per departmental procedure.
• Transports medications from the pneumatic tube and/or desk area to the RN and handles medication on the sterile field.
• Completes birth certificates and enters vaccination information in OSIS.
• Gathers medical supplies.
• Answers patient call lights.
• Cleans rooms and bed linens.
• Stocks supplies.
• Assists with some medical procedures.
• Transports patients.
• Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
• Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continuing education opportunities.
• Ensures operation of equipment by verifying preventive maintenance requirements, calling for repairs, and evaluating new equipment.
• Regular attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts.
• Adapts assessment, treatment, and care methods to accommodate physical, cultural, age-specific, and developmental needs.
• Maintains a cooperative relationship among healthcare teams by communicating information and participating in team problem-solving.
• Adheres to safety protocols at all times.
• Implements DRH Standards of Behavior and exhibits behaviors consistent with DRH core values.
• Performs other similar duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• American Heart Association BLS certification required (may earn within 30 days of hire or transfer).
• Communication skills including fluency in oral and written English.
• Basic computer skills, including familiarity with email, software, and Electronic Health Record (EHR) tools.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to remain flexible and adapt to emergent or urgent situations.
• Ability to adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment, and techniques to meet job requirements.
• For positions requiring travel, a current valid driver’s license and automobile liability insurance must be maintained.

Additional Information

• This is a safety-sensitive position; applicants cannot test positive for THC (including with a valid medical marijuana card).
• Respirator and fit testing required for exposure to airborne infectious diseases, droplet-producing procedures, or caustic chemicals.
• Vaccinations are required per DRH policy (medical and religious exemptions available upon request).
