About the role
Aptive seeks a Biomedical Technician / Equipment Support Specialist – Information Systems to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) under the Biomedical Engineering Technical Professional Support Services (BETPSS) program.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical support for clinical information systems including MUSE, ICU - CIS, PACS, and other device-integrated healthcare platforms.
- Install, configure, test, and maintain networked medical equipment and associated information systems in accordance with VA and manufacturer specifications.
- Troubleshoot system connectivity, interface, and data integration issues involving HL7, DICOM, TCP/IP networking, and related protocols.
- Support system upgrades, patches, vulnerability mitigation, and cybersecurity compliance activities for medical devices and associated servers.
- Aid in maintaining accurate medical equipment inventories and configuration data within VA asset management systems.
- Collaborate with biomedical engineering and IT staff to support system integration between medical devices and hospital networks.
- Support preventative maintenance, performance verification, and operational testing of device-integrated information systems.
- Document maintenance actions, system configurations, and troubleshooting activities in accordance with VA policies and BETPSS program requirements.
- Afford technical support and training assistance to clinical and biomedical staff on system operation and troubleshooting.
Requirements
- Education Requirement: Associates or higher degree in the biomedical technology or biomedical engineering field; OR Associates or higher degree in electronics, a field of information technology, or engineering (other than biomedical engineering) AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR Completion of the Department of Defense (DOD) biomedical equipment technician training program; OR Completion of a DOD training program in repair and maintenance of electronic systems or information technology AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR Completion of a biomedical engineering technician or Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) certificate program that included an internship or apprenticeship; OR Completion of biomedical engineering technician or HTM certificate program that did not include an internship AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR Hold or having ever held certification as a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET), Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES), Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES), or Certified Healthcare Technology Manager (CHTM).
- Continuous maintenance of certification is not required throughout contract.
- A minimum of three years of hospital or healthcare experience performing medical equipment maintenance, with a minimum of one-year specialized experience in medical information systems and networking.
- Current and advanced knowledge of computer virus protection software, available software patches and upgrades, information security tools, electronics, computers, and network theory.
- Demonstrated competency in utilizing and maintaining computer and server-based medical equipment, medical record databases, and proprietary and generic software;
- Experience with TCP/IP, HL7, networking, network security and Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standards;
- Experience maintaining, interfacing and troubleshooting networked medical equipment to include VLAN configuration, IP addressing, sub-netting, and network security;
- Ability to interpret, identify and apply network engineering principles and practices;
- Ability to distinguish networking problems from non-networking problems.
- Understanding of regulatory agencies’ requirements, industry regulatory requirements and International Standard Organization standards.
- Familiarity with the setup and application of network test equipment and tools.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical literature, schematics, and drawings.
