Job Summary

This is an exciting time to join one of the largest Pathology departments in the country. Our new £30m Pathology building (on the St. James’s University Hospital site) and new Acute Hospital Laboratory (on the Leeds General Infirmary site) are now operational. The Department of Blood Sciences is seeking to recruit experienced and innovative Biomedical Scientists in Haematology to help shape, deliver and improve the service we deliver to our patients.

Key Roles And Responsibilities

• Carry out the job sufficiently and effectively by having successfully studied for an accredited degree in biomedical sciences, or other equivalent qualification acceptable to the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
• Registered Biomedical Scientist with the HCPC.
• Full competency member of the department following successful completion of competencies.
• Work both independently and as part of a team.
• Be flexible for unsocial hours of working and participate in our 24/7 Hours rota.
• Perform a wide range of specialist clinical technical investigations.
• Have excellent communication skills, manual dexterity, attention to detail and be able to prioritize workload effectively.
• Contribute towards the provision of an accurate and timely service for patients.
• Apply professional judgements and specialist skills to technically complex and sometimes difficult situations.
• Organize the tasks of support workers within the team.
• Communicate highly complex information, often related to patient management and care, to colleagues, healthcare staff and other organizations including engineers and service providers.
• Aid in the day-to-day running of the laboratory or a particular section of the laboratory, under supervision/delegation of the advanced biomedical scientist.
• Maintain continuous professional development and competencies.

What You Will Bring To The Role

• Work within a large hub laboratory utilizing cutting-edge technology, serving both Leeds Teaching Hospitals and the wider community.
• Gain wide-ranging experience within the discipline, including the regional Oncology center and the Leeds Children's Hospital.
• Be registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist and have experience working as a band 5 in Haematology in an NHS laboratory.
• Gain competence in techniques to enable participation in the delivery of 24-hour Pathology service.
• Supervise and support more junior members of staff within the laboratory.
• Maintain the department's accreditation status to ISO15189.
