Biomedical Equipment Technician

About the Role

The Biomedical Equipment Technician delivers training in biocontainment care, critical care, emergency medicine, and infectious disease air transport for Department of War (DoW) medical personnel.

Responsibilities

• Ensures compliance with safety regulations and policies.
• Tests and calibrates components using manufacturers' manuals and troubleshooting techniques, hand tools, power tools, and measuring devices.
• Maintains records of maintenance, repair, and required updates of equipment.
• Assesses and evaluates the condition of in-use medical equipment for maintenance, upgrade, or replacement recommendations.
• Inspects and tests malfunctioning medical and related equipment following manufacturers' specifications, using test and analysis instruments.
• Disassembles malfunctioning equipment and removes, repairs, and replaces defective parts such as motors, transformers, and circuit boards.
• Performs preventive maintenance or service such as cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting medical and simulation equipment in accordance with OEM specifications.
• Tests, evaluates, and classifies excess or in-use medical and simulation equipment and determines serviceability, condition, and disposition in accordance with regulations.
• Supports and operates medical and simulation equipment, NPCL, and C-130 Fuselage Trainer (FUT).
• Examines medical equipment, simulation equipment, NPCL, C-130 FUT, C-17 training platform, and facility's structural environment to check for proper use of equipment, protecting students, patients, and staff from electrical or mechanical hazards.
• Complies with NPCL Commercial User Guide.
• Maintains C-130 FUT and C-17 training platform, including bolting, torquing, removal, and placement of minor parts, ensuring availability of aircraft fuselages for training requirements.
• Studies technical manuals and attends training sessions provided by equipment manufacturers to maintain current knowledge.
• Provides training to medical staff by explaining and demonstrating correct operation and operator preventive maintenance of medical equipment.
• Wears personal protective equipment.
• Works with live electrical wires, switches, and transformers of various voltage levels, exposing the worker to the possibility of shock, cuts, bruises, scrapes, and serious burns.
• Lifts Human Patient Simulation equipment from one room to another.
• Works in low-light, high-volume environments and differing weather conditions simulating actual aeromedical evacuation missions.
• Works periodically on hard surfaces.
• Travels to provide in-person training, subject matter expertise, and support for up to 10 days per year for mission-essential activities including exercises, working groups, and training.
• Provides technical expertise and support on operating a high-tech patient simulator system.
• Prepares training environments, performs operations, and recovers equipment and environment for scheduled training and upon request by C-STARS Omaha Staff.
• Assists in managing and supporting daily operations of the simulation training program.
• Develops and provides training, safety, and maintenance materials appropriate to the operation of all simulation equipment as directed by the Simulation Program Coordinator or as warranted by operational necessity.
• Assists and provides guidance to simulation center set-up.
• Reports needs regarding simulation equipment in support of course training scenarios targeted to meet identified learning objectives.
• Assists with basic equipment troubleshooting items for the purpose of training additional cadre members.
• Supports cadre with pre, post, and during course tasks for all student activities including but not limited to building student packets, badge distribution, placing meal orders, daily course set-up/tear down/resupply, submitting end-of-course critiques to USAFSAM, and all administrative actions.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Associate degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology or Engineering.
• Minimum two years of experience in biomedical equipment technician roles.
• Possess a valid U.S. driver’s license to obtain authorization to operate a Government vehicle to service medical equipment in other buildings.
• Minimum one year of military medical/military deployment experience.
• Successful completion of USAFSAM's and Department's In-Processing/Orientation programs.

• Knowledge of and skills in applying a wide range of specialized methods, principles, and techniques of electronics and complex medical system failures, recovery of systems, adjusting, modifying, and improving systems to include hardware and software components.
• Knowledge of a wide range of electronic principles and practices, operating parameters, capabilities, and limitations of electronic systems associated with complex medical systems/equipment; systems and component design, capabilities, configurations, limitations, and functional operation; and various types of electronic logic.
• Knowledge of DoD, The Joint Commission, AAAHC, CAP, OSHA, NFPA, NEC, FDA, and other regulations, procedures, and practices as they apply to biomedical equipment.
• Ability to interpret technical data such as drawings, schematics, blueprints, and specifications of complete electronic systems; analyze problems in integrated/interfacing systems involving numerous complex circuits; and use complex electronic and electromechanical test and measuring equipment with integrated test functions for different purposes.
• Ability to maintain, repair, and test biomedical equipment including the Negatively Pressurized Conex Lite (NPCL) in accordance with strict OEM technical compliance.
• Ability to solve technical and performance problems for highly complex electronic systems.
• Ability to trace electronic logic from one system to another.
• Ability to use standard computers and software to enter and extract data to maintain records and document actions.
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 51 pounds and heavier loads occasionally, ensuring all movement of equipment adheres to NIOSH lifting equations and safety standards.
• Experience with military protocols and administrative actions like decorations, evaluations, and reports.
• Experience with Learning Management Systems, Audio/visual solutions, moulage creation & application, hyper-realistic simulators, and task-trainers.
• Experience with Air Force Technical Order System.
