Job Summary

Performs entry-level biomedical engineering duties to support safe, reliable, and effective operation of medical equipment used in patient care and clinical services. Troubleshoots, repairs, inspects, calibrates, tests, and maintains equipment while ensuring regulatory compliance.

Education & Experience

  • Required: Degree (Associate’s or Bachelor’s) and one (1) year of work experience in biomedical technology or healthcare electronics.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge: Anatomy, Physiology, and the fundamentals of electricity, electronics, and solid-state devices.
  • Knowledge: Biomedical equipment and functions.
  • Skill: Use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Ability: Diagnose and resolve equipment malfunctions.
  • Ability: Comply with safety, environmental, and infections control standards and practices.
  • Ability: Maintain files and records.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, calibrates, and tests analog and/or digital biomedical electronic equipment, instruments, and apparatus.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and/or electrical safety inspections on equipment.
  • Tests, adjusts, and calibrates to federal, state, and local electrical and fire safety standards and manufacturer specifications.
  • Aids in the installation of patient care or clinical laboratory equipment and with the development of methods and procedures for proper operation of electronic equipment.
  • Ensures compliance with safety and environmental procedures.
  • Confers with faculty, staff, clients, vendors, students, and/or supervisors in determining equipment problems or fulfilling service requirements.
  • Evaluates medical equipment and prepares reports and documentation for unusual incident equipment malfunctions.
  • Aids in creating and maintaining database files for equipment inventory.

Physical and Environmental Demands

  • Frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold.
  • Constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours.
  • Frequent activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature.
  • Frequent work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality.
  • Frequent bending.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds.
  • Constant pushing/pulling.
  • Constant reaching.
  • Constant sitting.
  • Constant standing.
  • Constant walking (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more).
