This position is with the Frederick National Laboratory, operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab focuses on addressing critical challenges in biomedical sciences, including cancer, AIDS, drug development, nanotechnology applications in medicine, and emerging infectious diseases.

About the Program

The Laboratory & Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides high-quality animal care and technical support for research conducted at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP offers a range of services, including husbandry, veterinary care, advanced technology, and pre-clinical scientific support. The program also supports the NIH Standardized Organoid Modeling (SOM) Initiative, aiming to develop validated, scalable, and reproducible organoid-based Novel Alternative Methods (NAMs) for biomedical research. The team provides technical infrastructure, operational integration, and specialized expertise to advance organoid models of normal human tissues from diverse tissue types and donor sources.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex assignments independently and report to a supervisor or scientist.
  • Independently evaluate the suitability and quality control of research assays.
  • Develop and validate new assays or automated workflows for reliability.
  • Prepare and execute research plans, proposals, or new production methodologies.
  • Function independently in a research laboratory or specialized scientific service, demonstrating originality and judgment.
  • Maintain advanced understanding of biomedical engineering instrumentation and process design.
  • Stay updated on pertinent areas through literature and scientific presentations.
  • Apply basic bioengineering principles to instrumentation, process design, and assay development.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university (or four years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • Minimum of two years of progressively responsible laboratory research experience.
  • Working knowledge of biomedical engineering and biomedical/medical image processing.
  • Hands-on experience with basic laboratory techniques in biomedical engineering.
  • Experience developing and implementing automated mechanical or computational workflows.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping and computer-aided design approaches.
  • Experience operating standard biomedical laboratory equipment and performing routine quality control procedures.
  • Experience analyzing and reporting experimental results.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Developing proficiency in one or more of the following: biomedical microscopy, digital image analysis, scientific computing for instrument control/data analysis, biomaterials manufacturing, biomedical device design and prototyping, cell-based/molecular assays, biomedical optics, or bioprinting.
  • Competency in at least one additional area from the list above.
  • Developing proficiency or competency in a total of at least three areas from the list above.

Job Hazards

This position may involve working with or exposure to infectious materials, requiring medical clearance and immunizations.

Pay

Competitive compensation ranging from $77,600.00 to $110,959.00 USD. The posted range is a general guideline and not a guarantee of final compensation. Factors such as job responsibilities, education, experience, knowledge, skills, internal equity, and market data will be considered in extending an offer. The salary range reflects full-time equivalent pay and may vary for part-time positions.
