Biological Science Laboratory Technician (Insect)

Qualifications

• One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-5 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
  • Independently performing all aspects of insect-rearing duties or caring for insects or related animals in a laboratory setting.
  • Performing collection, preparation, recording, and evaluation of data within a laboratory or production setting.
  OR 1 full year of graduate education in a field of study such as biology, entomology, or related fields. 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.
• Transcripts are required if: You are qualifying for the position based on education. You are qualifying for this position based on a combination of experience and education. This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university.
• Combination of education and experience at the GS-6 grade level: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level.

Major Duties

• Performs standardized, technical, field and laboratory duties that support long-and short-term projects of relevance to Plant Protection and Quarantine.
• Develops, refines, verifies, justifies, organizes, evaluates and analyzes data pertaining to risk, diagnosis, mitigation, rearing, control, treatment and quarantine status.
• Compiles metrics to ensure quality control and regulatory compliance.
• Executes specialized insect sterilization and/or colony management procedures in accordance with strict biological containment protocols and laboratory safety standards.
• Responsible for daily laboratory operational tasks.
