About the role

Set up, adjust, and operate a variety of auxiliary binding machines containing several cutting heads, control surfaces, or other attachments (e.g., inkjet and mailing devices, case making & decorating equipment, folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, binding/gluing machines).

Set up automatic bindery machines containing multiple functions and station capabilities (power paper cutters, power collators and gatherers, power folders, power speed binder) which can be electromechanically combined with other equipment to produce a complete bindery and finishing unit that processes printed sheets into final books, catalogs, manuals, directories, magazines, or other completed products.

Inspect equipment for safety issues. May operate automatic adhesive binding machines (perfect binders) that contain numerous interrelated process stations fed collated sheets or signatures to perform functions such as vibrating, milling, roughening, gluing, covering, and delivering or stacking completed books, magazines, or catalogs.

Make needed adjustments to coordinate multiple work stations on a single machine. Direct crew through all aspects of production. Monitor quality, output, and productivity.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret written work orders or job specifications containing bindery requirements to determine the number and sequence of machine operations required.
  • Independently decide on the type of equipment to be used while maintaining dimensional accuracy.
  • Calculate distances, clearances, and fits in combining machines.
  • Use standard and specialized tools to adjust and maintain the functional accuracy and operating conditions of bindery machines.
  • Set up and adjust machines for finishing operations, refining adjustments based on paper stock weight, color, machinability, and quality to prevent machining impressions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2 or more years of experience in bindery operations.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift/push up to 50 lbs.

Qualifications

  • General knowledge of complex bindery machines (e.g., fully automatic binding machines, multiple station collators, multiple folding units).
  • Thorough knowledge of set up, operating requirements, procedures, capabilities, and limitations of bindery machines for folding, collating, and cutting printed materials.
  • Skill in performing the full range of standard and specialized folds, collations, and cuts to produce finished products.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $20.23 - $26.83 per hour. Starting pay is determined based on relevant education, qualifications, skills, experience, certifications, proficiency, performance, shift, location, and business needs. Roles typically follow step progressions to a target rate or set increments over time. Total compensation may include overtime, shift differential, call-in, and/or stand-by pay.

Schedule

12-hour rotating days (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM).
