About the Role
The Youth Care Worker is responsible for the daily care and supervision of Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC), ensuring their health, safety, and well-being at all times. This role implements direct care services using trauma-informed practices to meet each child’s physical, social, emotional, educational, and recreational needs in accordance with agency policy, TDFPS Minimum Standards, and ORR Policy.
Responsibilities
- Maintaining positive, supportive, and professional relationships with UAC and program staff.
- Elevating concerns or issues related to UAC, program staff, work and living environment within required timeframes.
- Completing all required documentation for UAC accurately and within required timeframes.
- Ensuring the resident-to-staff ratio is properly maintained at all times.
- Utilizing positive behavior management techniques, including verbal redirection, prompting, reminders, de-escalation, and emergency behavior intervention.
- Providing overall care, supervision, and safety of children, including assisting with educational, recreational, and spiritual activities.
- Participating in daily community meetings to teach, support, and guide UAC.
- Teaching practical problem-solving, time and money management, and life skills.
- Assisting with daily chores to ensure a clean and orderly environment (e.g., laundry, sweeping, mopping, dishes, beds, windows).
- Cooperating with co-workers and supervisors, and providing feedback to supervisors.
- Maintaining an ongoing dialogue with workers on other shifts to promote continuity of care.
- Mentoring and assisting newly hired Youth Care Workers during the general observation training period.
- Reporting to work as scheduled and ensuring uninterrupted supervision of residents until relieved from duty.
- Elevating pertinent information or concerns regarding the health and well-being of UAC and the work/living environment.
- Ensuring special supervision and safety plan measures are adhered to at all times.
- Facilitating and monitoring intakes/admissions.
- Modeling professional conduct and demonstrating adequate skills, abilities, and judgment, especially during volatile situations.
- Coordinating and/or assisting in the facilitation of off-campus activities.
- Providing guidance and direction to UAC in social skills, emotion regulation, academics, problem-solving, personal hygiene, and life skill development.
- Ensuring adherence to medication administration procedures.
- Coordinating and/or providing transportation of UAC using agency vehicles.
- Completing routine inspections of facilities used by UAC and elevating maintenance needs or concerns.
- Demonstrating proficiency in knowledge of agency policy, TDFPS Minimum Standards, and ORR Policy.
- Actively participating in the enhancement and/or improvement of the living and working environment for residents and employees.
- Attending administrative staff meetings, staff retreats, and other team-building activities.
- Demonstrating knowledge and sensitivity of cultural norms, values, and heritage.
- Completing a mandatory 10-day New Employee Orientation; failure to meet this requirement will conclude employment.
- Completing all required professional development in a timely manner.
- Being sensitive to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
- Adhering to safety training and protocols daily and taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of self and others.
- Protecting the confidentiality of client information, services rendered, donor details, investigations, and financial information.
- Adhering to the Code of Conduct and the Faith and Morals Policy.
- Taking a solution-oriented approach in interactions and promoting collaboration and commitment to the organization’s Mission and Vision.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences, human services, or social service fields; or minimum high school diploma or equivalent plus one year of employment experience working in the child welfare field with children and/or adolescents in a social service setting.
- Experience working with children in a residential setting is preferred.
- Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and valid vehicle insurance.
- Proof of immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases transmitted by the respiratory route if working directly with unaccompanied children:
- Varicella: Two doses of varicella vaccine (at least 4 weeks apart) or born in the U.S. before 1980 with a reported history of chickenpox (verified by an adult present at the time of illness) or titers indicating varicella immunity or documentation from a healthcare provider verifying previous infection.
- MMR: Two doses of MMR vaccine (at least 4 weeks apart) or titers indicating immunity to all three diseases.
- DTaP or Tdap: Complete primary vaccination series. If primary series completed in childhood, one DTaP dose in adulthood.
- Influenza: One dose annually during flu season.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as policies, procedures, and program standards.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively before individuals and groups.
- Bilingual: Fluent in English and Spanish (reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension).
- Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, organize and manage responsibilities, and prioritize duties.
- Strong assessment skills and the ability to remain calm and composed in crisis situations.
- Detail-oriented, organized, self-motivated, and able to work well independently and on a team.

Travel Requirements
This position requires 10% local travel and 10% overnight travel.
Pay
$21.00 per hour plus shift differential.
