About the role
Behavioral Health Milieu Technician (BHMT) provides hands-on care to individuals with varying mental health and medical diagnoses. BHMTs observe, treat, and interact with patients and families under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Responsibilities
- Assist or lead educational, recreational, and therapeutic activities and group activities.
- Perform routine direct patient care, including vital signs, temperature, weight, and specimen collection.
- Participate in the intake and admission process, including inventory and search of personal belongings.
- Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment, observing and addressing patient indicators of escalation or risk.
- Communicate observations to the care team and document incidents in the Electronic Health Record.
- Support patient activities of daily living, including feeding, hygiene, and mobility.
- Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and procedural holds.
- Apply and remove physical restraints as directed by medical providers.
Qualifications
- Associate degree required with at least six months of direct patient care experience, or high school diploma/GED with three years of experience in a mental health-related field.
- Current BLS/CPR certification and Crisis Intervention training certification within three months of hire.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, mathematics, and measurements.
- Understanding of trauma-informed care and infection control policies.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to manage stress and handle challenging behaviors.
- Ability to move quickly and confidently to intervene in emergencies.
- Basic knowledge of data entry, collaborative care plans, and documentation in the medical record.
