About the role

The Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) serves as a key member of the Central Regional Office within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office. The role involves providing clinical expertise, collaborating with Child Protective Investigators (CPIs), and dependency case managers to identify and support parents with behavioral health conditions, particularly those with substance misuse disorders.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical expertise and assist with the identification of parents with behavioral health conditions, focusing on opioid use and other substance misuse disorders.
• Collaborate with CPIs and dependency case managers to build expertise with front-line staff, improve engagement with families, and enhance access to treatment and resources.
• Educate CPIs and dependency case managers on the identification of behavioral health disorders, the effects of such disorders on parent/caregiver behavior, and best practices for engagement and treatment.
• Partner with investigative staff to provide consultations on identifying danger threats, assessing adult functioning, and managing parental protective capacities.
• Maintain a working knowledge of community mental health and substance use providers and collaborate with them to develop contacts, facilitate referrals, and assist in engaging clients in recommended services.
• Track referrals and entry into treatment for parents with behavioral health disorders, especially those with substance misuse disorders.
• Support investigators in mitigating behavioral issues and crises.
• Participate in legal, multi-disciplinary, and other meetings to assist investigative staff and families.
• Respond to emergency events, assess impacts, coordinate psychological and mental health resources, and provide critical information to the Regional Manager and Director of Regional Operations and Initiatives.

Qualifications

• A master’s degree in a health or human services-related field.
• Three years of experience treating substance use disorders.
• Valid Class E Driver License.
• Florida license in psychology, social work, mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, or a registered intern.
• Experience of the child welfare and behavioral health systems and knowledge related to the impact of behavioral health conditions on parenting capacity.
• Experience in substance abuse prevention, treatment, or recovery support service.
• Experience coordinating community-based services for individuals or families.
• Certification as a Master’s-Level Addiction Professional.
• Experience with motivational interviewing.
