Work environment
Banner Thunderbird Medical Center’s Behavioral Health Unit is a 56-bed unit caring for a wide range of mental health diagnoses and patients with co-morbidities requiring an extra level of acute medical care. The team—including psychiatrists, nurses, and Behavioral Health case managers—collaborates closely to strategize treatment approaches. The environment is fast-paced and varied, offering opportunities to practice family therapy with pediatrics, group therapy with adults, and addiction counseling. The Day Shift hours are 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.
Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive care coordination for assigned patients, assessing plan of care and developing, implementing, monitoring, and documenting resource utilization and patient progress.
- Facilitate options and services to meet patients’ health care needs, with intensity of coordination based on patient need and payer requirements.
- Account for the quality of clinical services delivered and identify/resolve barriers to effective patient care.
- Manage individual patients across the health care continuum to achieve optimal clinical, financial, operational, and satisfaction outcomes.
- Provide assessment, psychoeducation, and psychotherapy to individuals, families, and groups.
- Coordinate all aspects of patient care from admission to discharge, interacting with physicians and the clinical treatment team.
- Lead process improvement activities for patient populations to achieve optimal outcomes.
- Evaluate medical necessity and appropriateness of care, optimizing patient outcomes.
- Establish and promote collaborative relationships with physicians, payers, and other health care team members.
- Collect and communicate pertinent, timely information to payers and others to fulfill utilization and regulatory requirements.
- Lead development and management of interdisciplinary patient discharge plans and effectively communicate the plan across the continuum of care.
- Educate internal team members on case management and managed care concepts and facilitate integration into daily practice.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in social work or related field or equivalent experience.
- Proficiency typically achieved with 5 years of clinical experience.
- Licensure in at least one of the following: social work, professional counseling, or marriage and family (certification requires two years post-graduate experience in a mental health setting or equivalent combination of education and documented supervised clinical experience).
- Positions providing direct services to substance abuse program patients must possess board licensure in addictions as required by state.
- Working knowledge of care management, hospital and community resources.
- Critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, effective communication skills, and time management skills.
- Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team format.
- Completion of post-offer Occupational Health physical assessment, drug screen, and background check (includes employment, criminal, and education verification).
State-specific credentials
- Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, and BUMG, BUMCT, or BUMCS in a Behavioral Health clinical setting that serves children must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain it for the duration of employment. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.
- Employees working in the Banner McKee Senior Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit must possess a Colorado Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain it for the duration of employment.
- Employees working in any Banner Staffing (BSS) Behavioral Health role in Arizona must possess a State of Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain it for the duration of employment.
