About the Role

The Behavior Support Specialist - PBIS collaborates with all staff in a school building to ensure schoolwide positive behavior supports are in place, creating a safe, civil, and respectful learning environment. The specialist provides Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavior interventions to small groups or individual students, observes and collects behavior data, stabilizes student behavior, implements positive behavior systems, trains staff, and collaborates in student team meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Support individual students whose behavior is detrimental to their learning or others’ by implementing positive behavior systems, interventions, and strategies.
  • Assess and analyze the function of student behavior with the school team.
  • Collaborate with the school team to plan strategies that replace disruptive behaviors with positive, productive, and socially appropriate behaviors.
  • Provide ongoing support for staff during school transitions, lunch times, and recess related to positive behavior support strategies.
  • Collaborate with various school team members, including teachers, PBIS committee, behavior intervention specialists, administrators, school psychologists, counselors, and other specialists.
  • Assess Schoolwide and Classroom PBIS Tier 1 and the effect of classroom management on student behaviors.
  • Observe visual support systems and determine triggers that escalate student behavior.
  • Confer with the Assistant Principal and Principal, observe and record data on targeted behaviors, and include student input in reward systems.
  • Document student escalations on Antecedent Behavior Consequence (ABC) forms.
  • Develop and implement positive behavior reinforcement systems, including charts, schedules, visual supports, routines, and interventions.
  • Train staff on systems and positive reinforcement strategies.
  • Obtain, read, and follow student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP), Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), and Aversive Intervention Plan (AIP).
  • Suggest additional visual supports to help students succeed.
  • Create written daily schedules, behavior expectations, reinforcement charts, and other documents to improve student behavior.
  • Communicate progress with the Behavior Intervention Specialist almost daily and provide intervention summaries.
  • Prepare staff training binders with student-specific positive behavior systems and model interventions.
  • Utilize BSD behavior resources and provide reference materials to teachers as needed.
  • Follow up post-intervention to assess implementation and consult on modifications.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent and an Associate’s (AA) Degree or higher, two years of college, or passing a formal state/local academic assessment.
  • Training and/or experience in implementing PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) theory and practice.
  • Experience working with a team to accomplish common goals.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of child development theory and its implications for teaching and learning.
  • Familiarity with a variety of reading and/or math methods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, and parents, both orally and in writing.
  • Willingness to work with students and families of diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to handle challenging situations.
  • Ability to meet confidentiality, punctuality, and attendance expectations.
  • Spanish language skills preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Positions typically require stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently, and/or negligible force constantly.
  • May be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.

Pay

$31.44/hour to $33.39/hour (starting hourly rate $31.44/hour) based on the negotiated collective bargaining agreement.

Schedule

32 hours per week for a 192-day annual assignment (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 7:30 AM to 2:45 PM; Wednesday 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM).
