About the role

In this role, you will guide elementary age participants through sports, arts, STEM, and other hands-on learning activities at a Y Before and After-School Enrichment (BASE) program. The program provides a safe and caring place for students outside of the classroom, helping teach teamwork and social-emotional learning while encouraging skill building, creative exploration, physical activity, and fun. BASE instructors will start on August 24.

Hiring for the following locations: Thurgood Marshall Elementary, Bailey Gatzert Elementary, and Sand Point Elementary.

Schedule

This is a part-time, onsite position with hours varying by school/location:

• Monday - Friday: 6:45 AM - Start of School
• Monday - Friday: End of School - 6:00 PM

The Y provides full-day programming on non-school days and early release days.

Pay

Hiring range: $21.30–$22.50/hour, depending on experience.

Responsibilities

• Implements culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate activities within the curriculum in accordance with the Youth Development goals of the YMCA.
• Supervises a group of children to ensure their health and safety and to provide a positive experience for each child.
• May provide guidance to staff/volunteers overseeing the activities of groups of children.
• Professionally communicates day-to-day, confidential, and evaluative information with parents/guardians.
• Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergency procedures.
• Assists in maintaining a developmentally appropriate site, including appearance, décor, and cleanliness.
• May prepare and serve snacks; cleans snack area.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as required.
• Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to talk or hear.
• Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
• Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.

Requirements

• Must be 16 years of age or older (18 or older preferred).
• 1–2 years’ experience with children (e.g., camps, childcare, tutoring, or nannying).
• Ability to model and demonstrate Y values: caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty.
• Experience planning and implementing group activities.
• Pre-employment TB test and MMR vaccination required (provided at no cost).
• High school diploma or equivalent, or currently enrolled in high school or an equivalent education program.
• Completion of minimum STARS required training and CPR/First Aid Training (at hire or no later than 30 days after employment).
• Cleared Portable Background Check in the statewide registry MERIT (at hire or during onboarding).

Qualifications

• Knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.) preferred.
• Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
