Beautification Director

About the role

Promote and coordinate Harrison County’s environmental sustainability, educate best practices for litter control, and support environmental projects.

Responsibilities

• Work with Keep America Beautiful, Keep MS Beautiful, MS Recycling Coalition, Harrison County Utility Authority, and the MS Land Trust to implement services and coordinate events that promote beautification awareness.
• Apply for various DEQ Grants; coordinate reimbursements through supervisors and DEQ; stay within budget on various projects; coordinate with outside agencies on various grants.
• Coordinate programs in litter reduction and recycling.
• Implement and coordinate educational programs for area schools.
• Encourage business and civic organizations to provide sponsorship donations, volunteers, and in-kind services.
• Develop promotional, educational, and public service advertising materials.
• Coordinate the Beautification agenda and take accurate minutes of commission meetings.
• Report and provide follow-up on complaints related to littering or related issues.
• Coordinate and work with vendors to pick up what is to be collected; pay vendors for disposal.
• Coordinate annual Christmas tree recycling program in partnership with Mississippi Power.
• Coordinate with various county departments on collection.
• Provide outreach and education; participate in career day; participate in field day to educate citizens on what Harrison County is doing to be environmentally conscious.
• Participate in Coastal Cleanup; secure sponsors and volunteers for event (1,200–1,500 volunteers).
• Coordinate the Bring IT event in cooperation with Mississippi Power Company, including the grant application to MDEQ and securing vendors and payment and grant reimbursement.
• Coordinate the Renew Our Rivers project in cooperation with Mississippi Power at locations including Deer Island Cleanup, Back Bay/D’Iberville, Gulfport Lake/Popps Ferry, and Chemours.
• Continue existing and develop new Harrison County Beautification Commission projects, including:
  • Christmas Cardboard Recycling Pick-Up at the Point – Point Cadet
  • Harrison County Soil and Water Field Day
  • Coastal Cleanup in cooperation with the MSU Extension Service
  • Leaders Against Litter – Pilot Program with area elementary schools

Requirements

• Ability to prepare complete narrative and statistical reports.
• Ability to represent Harrison County with a high standard of professionalism and to serve as an effective facilitator of meetings.
• Communicate regularly with the public through a variety of media including newsletter articles, email and phone.
• Knowledge of computer fundamentals and business software, including spreadsheet and word processing software (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Knowledge of all related safety procedures.
• Knowledge in grant writing and implementation.

Qualifications

• A four-year degree in a related field with two years of experience is preferred, but will consider a high school diploma or equivalent with five to eight years of successful, full-time paid employment related to the above duties.
• Must possess a valid Mississippi driver’s license before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.

Pay
