Basketball - Assistant Coach - Girls - Middle School

About the role

Middle school assistant coaches oversee the growth and development of student athletes by focusing on fundamental skills instruction with an emphasis on whole child development to include expectations for academic and athletic excellence, leadership skills, and positive social relationships.

Responsibilities

• Keep abreast of knowledge and techniques associated with the sport by staying current with sport-specific literature and attending clinics and workshops.
• Study and understand the rules and regulations of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), Federal Way Public Schools, and the league in which the team competes.
• Promote the sport within the school and encourage student participation.
• Hold practice on a daily basis; absence from practice should be for illness and/or an emergency situation only and must be cleared in advance by the building athletic director.
• Model safety training relative to the sport as directed by the head coach; maintain a working knowledge of basic athletic training skills and procedures, including basic taping and first aid functions.
• Exercise good judgment and project positive coaching behaviors; assume a major role in molding student athletes in the program and the school/community at large.
• Teach and develop basic skills fundamentals, leadership characteristics, and cooperative, team-oriented behavior with an even keel, calm, and positive approach.
• Serve as an example of sportsmanship and humility at all times; handle obstacles or losses with grace, dignity, and pride; model and insist upon ethical behavior and good citizenship.
• Be responsible for participants in the program from the time they report until the time they leave.
• Thoroughly understand and reinforce eligibility requirements, participation rules, and the District Eligibility Code as directed by the head coach.
• Ensure each program participant has completed the eligibility process before taking part in any form of practice activity.
• Call 911 without hesitation for serious and/or difficult to assess injuries; fill out and submit an Accident Report Form to the building athletic director within 24 hours of a student or staff member being injured; immediately report emergency situations to the building athletic director and director of athletics.
• Attend building, district, and league meetings.
• Immediately report safety concerns to the head coach and assume responsibility for the care of equipment and facilities used in the program.
• Report violations and/or ejections to the head coach, building athletic director, and director of athletics immediately following the contest where the infraction occurred.
• Attend an evaluation meeting with the building athletic director following the season.
• Meet with the head coach in advance of the season to develop program goals and discuss a plan to ensure consistent instruction of fundamental skills, systems, and strategies.
• Be responsible for program equipment and supplies and account for all program-related items checked out at the start of the season.
• Request essential program needs through the head coach and avoid purchasing program items with personal funds.
• Work through the head coach to discuss potential fundraising activities and avoid raising or handling funds without advance approval from the building athletic director.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• One year of sport-specific playing and/or coaching experience in a secondary and/or post-secondary athletics program and/or related club coaching experience.
• Proven training and experience in the presentation of drills, safety factors, and proper application of skills.

Additional Requirements

• Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis.
• At least 19 years of age to apply.
• Criminal background clearance.
• First Aid and CPR certification (must be hands-on training).
• Online Concussion Training (CT).

Preferred Qualifications

• Three or more years of paid middle school and/or post-secondary sport-specific coaching experience and/or related club coaching experience.
• Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course to include passing the test.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of league and WIAA rules and regulations.
• National Federation of Middle Schools (NFHS) sport-specific rules and regulations.
• Record keeping and report preparation.
• Ability to organize, administrate, and oversee a sport-specific athletics program at each level of the program.
• Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures.
• Organize and perform job responsibilities efficiently and independently without close supervision; pay strict attention to detail.
• Speak, read, and follow written or verbal communications.
• Practice effective safety and security within individual work routines.
• Develop and maintain positive customer relations with staff and service providers.
• Work collaboratively with District staff and promote teamwork with co-workers.
• Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct including the requirements of confidentiality.
• Relate effectively with parents, staff, students, and the public in a multicultural and multiracial community.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The employee regularly works in indoor conditions and on surfaces that vary in height and stability. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
