Basic Care- Certified Medication Aide

Qualifications

• A high school graduate or equivalent
• Certified Medication Aide required
• BLS and CNA/MA II Certification required
• 2-3 years’ experience in health field preferred
• Good understanding of medical and pharmacological terminology

Job Responsibilities

• Accurately administers medications observing the six rights.
• Verbalizes knowledge of medications administered and desired drug effects.
• Demonstrates knowledge regarding the resident’s general health and the condition that the medication is prescribed to treat or prevent.
• Verbalizes knowledge of adverse reactions, drug/drug interactions and drug/food interactions.
• Administers medications and therapies in accordance with facility policies and procedures.
• Follows governmental regulations for administering and storing medications.
• Reports any medication schedule adjustments that need to be made to the Charge Nurse.
• Respects resident rights, including the right to refuse medication and the right to be informed of the consequences of that refusal.
• Administers medications and treatments in the proper setting, respecting the residents’ right to privacy.
• Maintains accurate and complete documentation for medications administered.
• Complete other CNA duties and assist other staff when needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Typical Working Conditions

• Work takes place in the Basic Care area.
• CMA are involved in the administration of medications to geriatric residents.

Typical Physical Demands

• Requires full range of motion, standing, and walking for extensive periods of time, and occasional lifting, carrying of items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
• Requires working under stressful conditions intermittently.
• Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
