About the Role

Under the direct supervision of the Team Leader Coach and Assistant Team Leader (ATL), this role ensures the efficient and cost-effective operation and stewardship of the Bargain Barn. Responsibilities include customer service, cash register sales, facility security and maintenance, and maximizing profitability while increasing training opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide open and honest communication to ensure the safety of team members, donors, and customers.
  • Uphold Goodwill’s drug-free workplace and maintain a positive work environment aligned with Goodwill’s Core Values and Guiding Principles.
  • Adhere to Goodwill’s zero-tolerance policies for harassment, substance abuse, workplace violence, unreported medical incidents, and theft.
  • Greet customers promptly, courteously, and professionally, both in person and via phone, aiming for 100% customer delight.
  • Operate the POS system accurately to process sales, price merchandise, and record sales data.
  • Maintain cleanliness of front doors, counters, glass, and the front of the store; return shopping carts and baskets to designated areas.
  • Assist with promotions, including customer information, signage, and special displays.
  • Ensure all saleable merchandise reaches the sales floor accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Support stocking, rotation, and maintenance of the sales floor and cash/wrap areas to keep them neat and organized.
  • Rotate merchandise on the sales floor and place apparel, wares, shoes, and accessories in their correct locations.
  • Assist with quality and safety control, using safe work procedures and personal protective equipment as required.
  • Report equipment defects, incidents, injuries, or damage promptly to the supervisor.
  • Move material handling equipment safely in accordance with organizational and safety policies.
  • Adhere to all Goodwill policies and procedures, including security measures to prevent theft and ensure proper handling of cash receipts.
  • Perform duties in alignment with Goodwill’s Guiding Principles, including:
    • Providing world-class customer service.
    • Maintaining a clean, neat, and organized store.
    • Greeting donors within 10 seconds.
    • Ensuring a full store with full inventory and processing donations within 24 hours.
    • Prioritizing hard goods and ensuring rotation of merchandise to increase donor value and profits.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with team leaders and members.
  • Assist in training new cashiers as needed.
  • Attend in-service and related training as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Team Leader Coach.
  • May participate in activities outside of Goodwill.

Requirements

  • Ability to work in non-climate-controlled environments.
  • Ability to see details at close range and guide the parking of vehicles.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with leadership, team members, customers, and clients.
  • Maintain a positive, friendly attitude and a neat, clean, and well-groomed appearance.
  • Strong listening skills to understand information presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Skill in operation monitoring to ensure machines are working properly.
  • Ability to work under general supervision.
  • Prior experience in a retail environment preferred.
  • Six months of previous cashiering experience.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to stand, bend, and reach regularly.
  • Able to lift, push, pull, carry, or otherwise move up to 40 pounds independently; assistance required for weights over 40 pounds.

  • Sales vs. Budget (Location vs. goal).
  • Safety – GGC Safety metric score.
  • Attendance – Works assigned schedule and notifies leadership of any issues.
  • Quality of Work – Attitude, sense of urgency, image, productivity, and individual safety performance.
  • Customer Service – 10-second rule for greeting internal and external customers, maintaining a smile, and ensuring process integrity.
  • Transaction Value (Location vs. previous year).
  • Change round-up as a percentage of transactions (30% or higher than the previous year).
  • Accuracy of register input.
  • Location Ownership – Proactive approach to adding value through image, workstation, teamwork, productivity, and communication.
  • Work Quantity – Keeps merchandise flowing, consistently meets production goals, and ensures the sales floor and back room are full and fresh.
