Background Investigator

About the Role

Serve as an impartial investigator of employment candidates, checking for criminal histories, application inconsistencies, omissions, accuracy, and other relevant factors to determine suitability for employment with the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with candidates to schedule in-person meetings to review the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ).
• Review candidates' completed PHQs in person, checking for inconsistencies, errors, omissions, falsifications, and compliance with minimum requirements.
• Have candidates execute all necessary release and authorization forms.
• Verify documents such as birth certificates, social security cards, driver’s licenses, high school diplomas, DD-214 forms, and others.
• Obtain and review arrest reports, NCIC reports, candidate reference questionnaires, polygraphs, social media reports, Kansas CPOST records, and other relevant documents.
• Conduct thorough interviews with a wide variety of individuals, including candidates, relatives, references, acquaintances, teachers, neighbors, current/past employers, and military acquaintances. Make every effort to interview individuals in person or through other means if necessary.
• Write complete and detailed statements of all interviews conducted.
• Summarize findings from each area of the background investigation in a clear and defensible manner.
• Compile all required documentation to complete a thorough and impartial investigation.
• Prepare an investigator recommendation for employment based on gathered information.
