About The Role SITE Technologies is seeking a highly skilled Lead Backend Software Engineer to spearhead the development and evolution of its backend systems. This role is a blend of technical leadership and hands-on engineering, requiring the individual to manage a small team of senior backend engineers while actively contributing to architecture, implementation, and operational excellence. The ideal candidate will have a pragmatic, product-oriented mindset and possess strong skills in designing reliable, scalable backend systems. The Lead Engineer will collaborate closely with product managers, frontend teams, data specialists, and business stakeholders to deliver robust solutions encompassing geospatial data, imagery, asset workflows, reporting, third-party integrations, and AI-driven product features. This role offers an exciting opportunity to influence the technical direction of a growing company and work on cutting-edge AI and geospatial projects. Qualifications 7+ years of experience in backend development, with proficiency in PythonProven experience as a hands-on technical lead managing engineering teamsStrong understanding of backend architecture, workflow modeling, API design, and data consistencyExperience with FastAPI or similar Python frameworks for building production APIsDeep knowledge of relational databases such as PostgreSQL, and ORM tools like SQLAlchemyFamiliarity with AWS backend services including ECS, Lambda, RDS, S3, and IAMExperience with Docker, Git, and CI/CD pipelines using tools like GitHub Actions or AWS CodePipelineExceptional communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple teamsExperience mentoring senior engineers and fostering team growthUnderstanding of geospatial data, ETL pipelines, and data migration processesPractical knowledge of infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform and TerragruntExperience with observability tools like Datadog and SentryFamiliarity with AI coding agents such as Claude Code and Cursor is a plus Responsibilities Lead the technical design and implementation of core backend APIs and services, primarily in Python and FastAPIDefine and set architectural standards for domain models, schemas, service boundaries, and API contractsTranslate product priorities into detailed technical plans, milestones, and deliverablesPersonally lead development efforts on critical features, conduct code reviews, and oversee release planningMaintain high standards for testing, CI/CD, security, observability, and system reliabilityDevelop reliable integrations across geospatial, media, reporting, asset management, and third-party systemsManage ETL processes and data migrations for imagery, geospatial, and operational dataDirectly oversee a team of 3 to 4 senior backend engineers, providing mentorship and performance managementRemove delivery blockers, delegate tasks effectively, and ensure timely delivery of high-quality systemsCollaborate with cross-functional teams including product, frontend, data, operations, and QA to prioritize work and deliver valueParticipate in hiring, onboarding, and developing backend engineering talent Benefits Remote work opportunity based in one of 18 eligible U.S. statesCompetitive annual salary ranging from $70,000 to $90,000, plus stock optionsGenerous paid vacation and sick leave policies10 company holidays and 2 floating holidays annuallyPaid volunteer days (two per year)Paid parental leave benefits after 90 days of employmentComprehensive health, dental, vision, life, and short-term disability insurance at no cost starting the first month401(k) plan with a 4% employer safe harbor contributionAccess to a collaborative and innovative workplace culture Equal Opportunity SITE Technologies is an equal opportunity employer.
