Backend Engineer (AI, API)

About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Backend Engineer to join our dynamic team and lead the design and development of our core backend systems. This pivotal role involves architecting high-performance, reliable infrastructure that supports our rapidly expanding B2B SaaS platform. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of distributed systems, APIs, data modeling, and backend architecture, combined with a modern, AI-native approach to engineering.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in backend or full-stack engineering, preferably within SaaS or high-scale distributed systems environments.
• Proven track record of designing, scaling, and operating complex backend systems from early-stage growth to maturity.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, APIs, data modeling, and backend architecture patterns.
• Strong proficiency with modern AI engineering workflows and tooling, including tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, ChatGPT, Devin, or similar.
• Experience building secure, observable, fault-tolerant systems in production environments.
• Excellent collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, product, infrastructure, and data teams.
• Strong problem-solving skills and engineering judgment, with an adaptable and pragmatic approach to technology choices.
• Experience with modern testing, observability, and operational practices to ensure system resilience and developer productivity.

Responsibilities

• Own and architect major components of backend infrastructure, including APIs, distributed systems, data models, and core business logic.
• Utilize AI-assisted engineering tools daily to enhance development speed, debugging, testing, documentation, and operational efficiency.
• Identify and implement opportunities to integrate AI into internal systems and customer-facing platform features.
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and iterate on production systems with a focus on scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
• Architect systems capable of supporting increasing complexity, scale, and evolving customer workflows.
• Create scalable abstractions, internal frameworks, and platform capabilities to accelerate product development across teams.
• Drive the technical vision and contribute to architectural decisions related to performance, security, and platform evolution.
• Mentor and guide engineering team members, sharing best practices and raising the overall technical proficiency of the backend engineering team.
