AY27 - Nursing Instructor, Medical/Surgical

East Los Angeles College (ELAC), established in 1945 as part of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), serves students in the Los Angeles suburb of Monterey Park and is the largest campus in its district. The college has an international, multicultural student body and offers both academic transfer courses and occupational programs.

About the Department

The ELAC Nursing Department offers an Associate in Science Registered Nursing Degree Program (ADN). The curriculum is based on the National Council of State Board of Nursing (NCSBN), Quality Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN), and the Nursing Process. Students receive theory knowledge concurrently with clinical experience through affiliations with local hospitals and healthcare agencies.

Responsibilities

• Teach theory, laboratory, and/or clinical components of medical-surgical courses.
• Teach courses over an academic year in accordance with established course outlines.
• Provide resource and coaching to students as needed.
• Participate in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs).
• Maintain scheduled office hours for student contact.
• Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the academic field.
• Interface with assigned clinical facilities to maintain a desirable learning environment.
• Develop and update department course curricula, including multimedia technology platforms.
• Active involvement in campus responsibilities, including committee obligations and accreditation.
• Assist in developing new courses and curricula in Nursing as needed.
• Assume departmental duties as assigned by the chairperson (e.g., program review, advisory committee meetings, student advisement, and campus committees).
• Develop supplementary materials and incorporate instructional technology.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

The regular weekly teaching load is 15 standard hours. Evening and/or weekend classes may be scheduled based on department needs.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Nursing OR Bachelor’s degree in Nursing AND Master’s degree in Health Education or Health Science OR the equivalent OR the minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher.
• At least one year of experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care within the last five years in Medical-Surgical Nursing.
• Minimum of one-year teaching experience (two academic semesters or three quarters) in a Registered Nursing Program in Medical/Surgical Nursing or completion of a post-baccalaureate course which includes practice in teaching registered nursing.
• Current California RN License by the start of employment.
• Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

A medical certificate indicating fitness to instruct or associate with students is required at the applicant's expense after selection. Additional health requirements may include:

Desirable Qualifications

• Recent and strong background in Medical-Surgical Nursing acute care practice (three to five years' experience within the last five years).
• A second BRN specialty approval (Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, or Obstetrical/Maternal Child).
• Experience in Geriatric Nursing.
• Excellent academic record and experience teaching adult medical-surgical nursing in a community college setting.
• Knowledge of current nursing theory and clinical practice in the subject matter.
• Ability to assume responsibility and accountability for instruction, evaluation of students, and curriculum planning.
• Commitment to student success, including facilitating learning through clinical simulation, virtual reality, and high-fidelity simulators.
• Experience using Canvas Learning Management System, Zoom, curriculum development, NCLEX-RN Prep, and ATI testing service.
• Understanding or experience in using student learning outcomes (SLOs) to promote student success.
• Commitment to collegiality within the instructional environment.
• Ability to communicate clearly with students and colleagues.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.
• Ability to adapt to changes in nursing education and healthcare delivery.

Pay

The current salary starting range is from $76,960 to $143,000 for the 10-month academic year, depending on education and experience. A doctoral differential of $4,870 per academic year is available.
