About the role
We are seeking a Senior AWS Cloud Platform / FinOps Engineer to lead cloud transformation initiatives, optimize cloud financial operations, and enhance platform reliability through SRE and DevOps best practices. This role requires strong expertise in AWS cloud engineering, FinOps, cloud governance, automation, and cost optimization.
Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years of IT experience, with at least 5 years in AWS Cloud Platform engineering.
- Strong leadership experience driving transformation initiatives.
- 2+ years in cloud cost optimization / FinOps / cloud financial management.
- Experience with SRE principles and transformation.
- Solid understanding of software coding techniques and full-spectrum software engineering (build, integration, test, releasing, and deployment) using Python.
- Experience developing and/or challenging engineering solutions/practices and collaborating with peers (Dev, Architects, Engineers) and customers.
- Strong hands-on knowledge of AWS platform and services, including but not limited to OUs, tagging, IAM concepts, VPC, Networking, Direct Connect, Subnets, NACLs, Security Groups, EC2, S3, IAM, ELBs, Lambda, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, EKS.
- Familiarity with Terraform automation, Ansible playbooks, and Python code.
- Minimum of one AWS certification.
- Understanding of DevOps toolchains, including Git/repo, Crucible, Jenkins.
- Solid experience with a CI/CD toolchain.
Responsibilities
- Use IBM Apptio / Apptio Cloudability or similar cloud cost tools, AWS Cost Explorer, CUR, Cost and Usage Reports, Budgets, Cost Anomaly Detection.
- Leverage Power BI, QuickSight, Excel, SQL, or other dashboard/reporting tools.
- Apply FOCUS / FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification awareness.
- Normalize data across providers and tools.
- Define and enforce tagging standards.
- Map cloud costs to tech stack, product, portfolio, application, environment, and account ownership.
- Partner with engineering teams to correct missing or inconsistent metadata.
- Support policies for account creation, ownership, cost accountability, and reporting accuracy.
- Build cloud cost visibility, reporting, dashboards, and executive summaries across cloud services.
- Analyze cost drivers, usage patterns, budget variance, forecasts, and optimization opportunities.
- Support showback / chargeback, cost allocation, tagging accuracy, and business-unit accountability.
- Identify waste such as idle resources, oversized instances, orphaned storage, unattached IPs, unused commitments, and non-optimized storage tiers.
- Run anomaly detection and response processes for unexpected cost spikes.
