AVP - Underwriter, Primary Retail Casualty
About the role
Sompo has a unique opportunity for an Assistant Vice President – Underwriter in our Primary Retail Casualty Business Unit. The Primary Retail Casualty team delivers a client-focused approach to risk management by providing comprehensive multi-line solutions. These include general liability, commercial auto, and workers' compensation coverages, offered through various program structures such as guaranteed cost, self-insured retentions (SIRs), deductibles, and captives. The team specializes in serving large accounts across diverse industries in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, such as manufacturing, real estate, hospitality, financial institutions, professional services, life sciences, technology, retail, and Asian-interest sectors. Collaboration with other business units, including property, umbrella/excess, and environmental, is a key component of the team's strategy and contributes to the organization's overall success.
Responsibilities
- Effectively drive acceptable submission activity and quickly determine acceptability of risk in accordance with Sompo guidelines and standards
- Good understanding of pricing components and rating methodology; prices risk based on financial and competitive analysis
- Analyze and underwrite specific risks such as Real Estate, Hospitality, Financial Institutions, Professional Services Firms, Manufacturing, Life Science, Technology, Retail etc.
- Knowledge in underwriting General Liability, Workers Compensation, Auto and Umbrella
- Exhibits strong technical underwriting skills through strategic, thorough account reviews and file documentation on large casualty business
- Complete understanding and ability to use sophisticated pricing models across various structures: guaranteed cost, captives, SIRs, deductibles, etc.
Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years of underwriting/insurance experience
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- Well verse and experienced in working, producing, and underwriting all sizes of accounts with large brokerage houses, agents, and specialty retailers
- Established underwriting, quoting, and binding track record of profitable business
- Well established relationships with brokers and agents on both a regional and national level
- Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as strong negotiation skills
- Willingness to travel to market assigned territory to include overnight trips (25%)

Pay
Salary Range: $125,000 – $200,000. Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
