AVP, Excess Casualty
About the role
Sompo has a unique opportunity for an Assistant Vice President Underwriter in our Retail Excess Casualty Business Unit. Our Excess Casualty team brings extensive expertise and maintains strong, long-standing relationships with a select group of appointed retail brokers. We provide a consistent underwriting approach and efficient turnaround times and are supported by an experienced claims team. We operate through a network of retail brokers who value long-term partnerships supported by a strong and reliable service commitment.
Responsibilities
- Prioritize and evaluate new and renewal submissions to identify profitable opportunities aligned with business and corporate objectives.
- Audit individual risk characteristics to determine capacity, attachment point, terms, and pricing for a book of diverse account sizes and operations.
- Authorize quotes, binders, and invoices within authority limits.
- Ensure underwriting discipline and pricing align with profitability goals and guidelines.
- Build and expand the business portfolio by enhancing relationships and identifying new opportunities.
- Represent the company at broker/client meetings and networking events.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including business development, claims, legal, and actuarial.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree preferred with a minimum of 8 years of underwriting experience and authority.
- Strong expertise in Excess Casualty insurance.
- Proven ability to exercise sound judgment, negotiate effectively, and make business decisions within authority limits; this skill set includes strong financial acumen, organizational skills, and accountability with exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.
- Collaborative team player with a proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with insureds, agents, and brokers, as well as across Sompo’s organization.
- Ability to travel to market assigned territory to include overnight trips (25%).
Qualifications
Salary Range: $125,000 - $200,000 Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
