The Opportunity

The AVP & Assistant General Counsel, Privacy is responsible for providing subject matter expertise on privacy law, including the GDPR, U.S. privacy law and other privacy law frameworks covering more than 40+ jurisdictions where MetLife operates. The position helps MetLife comply with its existing legal obligations as well as identify and assess legal issues in the changing legal, technological and operational landscapes, including with respect to changes brought about by Artificial Intelligence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide advice and counsel on legal and regulatory matters involving privacy having a potential global impact and requiring coordination across regions and businesses.
  • Identify and resolve legal issues and offer commercially viable solutions through research, analysis, creativity and teamwork that contribute to global business goals while ensuring appropriate management of legal risks.
  • Stay current on developments affecting privacy law around the world, including its intersection with technology and AI law.
  • Act as a trusted advisor and partner to Privacy Compliance, Global Government Relations, Global Technology & Operations, Employment Law, Human Resources and other business areas in developing and advocating positions to advance MetLife's interests.
  • Negotiate and document privacy provisions in complex agreements, including vendor, customer and M&A agreements.

Required Qualifications

  • Juris doctor degree from a top law school.
  • 10+ years privacy and complex contract negotiations experience at a major law firm and/or in-house legal department reflecting a record of accomplishment.
  • The ability to practice law in the jurisdiction where the applicant resides.
  • Demonstrate persuasion and leadership skills and exhibit a commercial mindset, especially in the context of the ability to relate to different stakeholders, business partners and colleagues.
  • Possess strong drafting, negotiating and analytical skills and communicate in English crisply and clearly, particularly when translating legal issues into straightforward practical analysis and advice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with using AI tools in a legal or business context.
  • Knowledge of the intersection of privacy law and AI law, including emerging regulatory frameworks governing the use of artificial intelligence.

Location Expectation

This is a hybrid role requiring a minimum of 3 days per week in office. The expected salary range for this position is $164,200 - $218,900. This role may also be eligible for annual short-term incentive compensation and stock-based long-term incentives. All incentives and benefits are subject to the applicable plan terms.
