Avionics Systems Engineer III

Blue Origin · Greater Seattle Area · 2 wk ago
On-siteEngineering$131k–$183k/yrFull-time

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.

About the role

In this role, you will support the design and development of avionics hardware subsystems that meet Blue Origin's needs for a variety of liquid propulsion rocket engines across multiple spaceflight systems. The avionics subsystem includes controller electronics, harness and interconnect design, instrumentation, sensors, power distribution, and electronic exciter hardware used on the engine for ignition and powered flight.

You will contribute to requirements development and decomposition, support technical trade studies, participate in risk management, and support integration, verification, and qualification of avionics hardware through environmental testing and flight certification. These responsibilities require broad application of systems engineering principles with a strong emphasis on electronics hardware design, packaging, and qualification in harsh environments.

You will work with the Engines Design Office and cross-functional teams to apply technical standards and processes that enable robust, right-sized avionics hardware development. This includes sharing lessons learned across Blue Engines programs to continuously improve how Blue Origin develops avionics and engine control hardware.

As part of a hardworking team of specialists, you will support the design and maturation of our avionics hardware subsystems through the application of systems engineering standard methodologies. You will be encouraged to mentor, both technically and professionally, less-experienced team members in avionics systems engineering. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities

  • Support the design and development of avionics hardware subsystems for liquid propulsion rocket engines.
  • Contribute to requirements development, decomposition, and technical trade studies.
  • Participate in risk management and support integration, verification, and qualification of avionics hardware.
  • Apply systems engineering principles to electronics hardware design, packaging, and qualification in harsh environments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to apply technical standards and processes for robust avionics hardware development.
  • Share lessons learned across Blue Engines programs to improve avionics and engine control hardware development.
  • Mentor less-experienced team members in avionics systems engineering.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, aerospace engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in avionics hardware, including systems engineering, electrical design and analysis, or verification/qualification/validation.
  • Experience in systems engineering in aerospace or defense, including requirements development (decomposition and allocation), verification and validation, and integration and test.
  • Understanding of electronics hardware design processes including schematic review, component selection, derating analysis, and thermal/mechanical packaging.
  • Experience with DO-254 hardware development assurance or equivalent hardware certification processes.
  • Experience with DO-160 or MIL-STD-810 environmental qualification testing.
  • Familiarity with harness/cable design, connector selection, and EMI/EMC considerations.
  • Familiarity with ARP4754 development assurance processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the entire liquid rocket engine product life cycle, including system architecture and hardware maturation through qualification.
  • Experience with instrumentation systems, including sensor selection, signal conditioning, and data acquisition.
  • Familiarity with power electronics and distribution systems for engine control applications.
  • Familiarity with control systems hardware architecture and redundancy management.
  • Familiarity with Model Based Systems Engineering tools and processes (No Magic Cameo).
  • Experience with FPGA or programmable logic design.
  • Knowledge of MIL-STD-1553, SpaceWire, LVDS, or other aerospace communication interfaces.
