Avionics Flight Systems Integration Engineer

Blue Origin · Merritt Island, FL · 4 days ago
On-siteQuality Assurance$116k–$162k/yrFull-time

About the role

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

Responsibilities

  • Represent Avionics as a liaison between engineering and integration environments (Hardware-in-the-Loop Lab, Acceptance Testing, Production, and Vehicle Operations)
  • Act as customer interface between Avionics customers and software, driving updates to systems, processes, requirements, and tooling
  • Serve as a first-line responder for the Software SOS (NGSOS) Hotline — triaging real-time issues across HIL, Mission Control, LRU Production, and OLS, and ensuring every issue reaches the correct subject matter expert for resolution
  • Own and maintain production software configuration control tools, including the NG Avionics Loader and Manifest, and their associated work orders, documentation, and training materials
  • Support end-to-end execution of the software deployment processes, identifying and driving process and tooling efficiencies
  • Rehearse system-software integration activities in the HIL prior to production floor execution; verify staffing and tooling readiness ahead of builds and campaigns
  • Develop and maintain troubleshooting guides, panels, and operational documentation to reduce reliance on tribal knowledge and support training of new operators and technicians
  • Provide occasional after-hours and on-call support during real-time troubleshooting events, surge campaigns, and launch operations

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree or equivalent experience in Engineering or a related technical field
  • Experience with developing analyses and trade studies for sophisticated avionics systems
  • Familiarity with Linux systems administration/usage and Ethernet-based networking in a lab or operational environment
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly troubleshoot and resolve technical issues under time pressure
  • Experience writing or reviewing technical requirements
  • Ability to work with partially defined requirements and changing criteria
  • Engaging communicator, able to explain difficult engineering concepts to people of other engineering fields: Electrical, Software, Mechanical
  • Willingness and ability to support occasional after-hours, on-call, or surge staffing needs
  • Ability to travel as required (see Travel section below)

Desired

  • 5+ years validated experience with avionics operations
  • Experience supporting Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test environments or vehicle production integration
  • Familiarity with software load/version tracking and audit tooling
  • Prior experience in a console operations, real-time support, or Mission Control role

Travel

  • If based in Cape Canaveral, FL: Occasional travel to Kent, WA required (typically a few trips per year, aligned with surge events and cross-site coordination)
  • If based in Kent, WA: Frequent travel to Cape Canaveral, FL required to support OLS operations, HIL integration, and launch campaigns

Culture Statement

Don’t meet all desired requirements? Studies have shown that some people are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single desired qualification. At Blue Origin, we are dedicated to building an authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every desired qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
