Automotive Technician, Fleet Services

Under the general direction of the Fleet Manager, the incumbent is responsible for the efficient and safe repair of vehicles assigned to UCR, including inspection, repair, and timely performance of scheduled maintenance. Maintains a clean and safe shop, reports or repairs discrepancies, and consults with leads or other technicians as needed. Coordinates off-campus work with outside vendors and ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Occupational Health and Safety (OSHA).

Responsibilities

• Perform inspections and repairs on light and heavy-duty vehicles.
• Maintain a clean and safe shop environment; report or repair any discrepancies.
• Consult with lead or other technicians as needed for complex repairs.
• Coordinate off-campus work with outside vendors when necessary.
• Ensure compliance with DOT, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies.
• Use an automotive work order system (e.g., Agile FleetCommander) to document repairs and maintenance.
• Handle hazardous materials (e.g., used oils, batteries, auto shop chemicals) safely.
• Read and interpret technical automotive manuals and diagnostic equipment.
• Write clear and concise diagnostic and maintenance reports.
• Provide good customer service and resolve problems diplomatically.

Requirements

• 2 years of hands-on experience in a vehicle maintenance shop environment, repairing light and heavy-duty vehicles.
• Valid driver’s license and a driving record compliant with local policies/procedures; may require enrollment in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
• Current work authorization for UCR staff positions (sponsorship not available).
• Ability to work with limited oversight and communicate effectively in English using appropriate automotive vocabulary.
• Proficiency in using computers, automotive work order systems (e.g., Agile FleetCommander), Outlook, and Microsoft Office suite.
• Demonstrated skill in using standard automotive tools and equipment.
• Ability to read and understand technical manuals and interpret measurement/diagnostic equipment.
• Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
• Ability to lift, carry, stack, and move objects weighing 50–70 pounds.
• Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and prioritize tasks efficiently.
• Competency in providing customer service with a pleasant and diplomatic demeanor.
• Ability to withstand exposure to automotive chemicals, fluids, and oils.

Preferred Qualifications

• Working knowledge of automotive fuel systems.
• Thorough knowledge of department and University policies and procedures.

Pay

The full salary range for this position is $66,043.44 – $98,115.12 annually. Salary offers are based on education, licensure, certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.
