About the Role

We are seeking a reliable, team-oriented Automotive Technician to join our Fleet Operations Division in a temporary part-time position. This role supports the maintenance and repair of over 1,100 County-owned vehicles, ensuring reliability and uptime for administrative staff, EMS, Sheriff’s Office, emergency response teams, and other service departments. You’ll work alongside a team of highly trained, certified professionals in a collaborative and safety-focused environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform automotive repairs, including tire replacement, oil changes, bulb replacement, battery service, and brake repairs.
  • Utilize County-issued and personally owned tools to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Assist Senior Technicians with complex repairs, such as engines, transmissions, HVAC, steering, electrical systems, body/chassis, exhaust, onboard diagnostics, and glass.
  • Test advanced electrical systems, emergency equipment, and diagnostic systems.
  • Adhere to workplace safety practices, including proper PPE usage, in compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Work independently or as part of a team to ensure vehicle reliability and support County operations.
  • Use computers and software to document time, materials, and work performed.
  • Demonstrate integrity, ethical conduct, and adherence to County policies.
  • Follow detailed instructions and apply sound judgment in daily tasks.
  • Provide excellent communication, customer service, and interpersonal support to peers and customers.

This is an essential position requiring availability during adverse weather or emergency situations. A pre-employment drug test and participation in the County’s random drug testing program are required due to the safety-sensitive nature of the role.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One year of experience in automotive maintenance.
  • Valid Driver’s License with a safe driving record.
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal automotive instruction.
  • NC State Inspector & Emission license.
  • 2+ years of automotive experience, including diagnostic skills.
  • At least 2 ASE Certifications or completion within the first year of employment.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 11:00 AM (20 hours per week, no nights or weekends).

Pay

Hiring range: $26.44 – $30.84 per hour. Market range: $26.44 – $35.23 per hour.

General Services Center, Raleigh, NC 27603.
