About the role

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office is seeking a skilled Automotive Fleet Maintenance Technician to join our team. This position works in an air-conditioned, state-of-the-art facility in Cocoa, Florida.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes the requirements of the job based on the corresponding work order.
  • Troubleshoots vehicles with mechanical problems to locate cause of the malfunction.
  • Performs repairs and/or preventive maintenance on vehicles as required.
  • Completes road tests on vehicles after repairs to ensure proper and safe operation.
  • Schedules repair and maintenance work, notifies customers of completion of work, and orders vehicle parts.
  • Picks-up and delivers vehicles to be serviced.
  • Outfits new vehicles and strips old vehicles as required.
  • Rebuilds motors, transmissions, and brakes.
  • Installs emergency equipment in Sheriff's fleet vehicles, including emergency lighting, police radios, antennas, electric weapons storage, prisoner partitions, and related equipment.
  • Installs wiring, cables, video, and computer equipment in Sheriff's fleet vehicles.
  • Installs and replaces graphic decals on vehicles.
  • Repairs and maintains emergency equipment.
  • Maintains work area and equipment in compliance with Department policies and procedures.
  • Regular, dependable, and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Requires one year of formal training or college education specializing in Automotive Repair or a closely related field.
  • Requires one year of related work experience. One additional year of work experience in lieu of one year of college/formal training may be accepted.
  • Requires a valid Florida Class E Driver's License (must be maintained for duration of employment).

Qualifications

  • Requires one of the following ASE certifications: A1 Engine Repair, A2 Automatic Transmission, A4 Suspension and Steering, A5 Brakes, A6 Electrical, A7 Air Conditioning.
  • Advanced Certified Mechanic: Requires the following certifications: A3 Manual Drive Train and Axles, A8 Engine Performance, and L1 Advanced Engine Performance Specialist.
  • Emergency Law Enforcement Vehicle Installation Technician Certification: $50.00 bi-weekly.

Pay

Starting rate of pay may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, education, training, and/or experience.

Schedule

  • Current shift available is working Monday through Friday, 1300-2200 (1:00 pm to 10:00 pm).

Additional Information

  • Work is performed in an auto repair shop environment.
  • Physical and dexterity requirements: Requires medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching, and lifting all of the time, exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis, and exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy. Must occasionally lift approximately 70 pounds. Must possess the strength and stamina required to work with heavy equipment and work in awkward positions.
  • This position requires successful completion of the Sheriff's Office pre-employment medical certification.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation including polygraph, reference/employment/neighborhood checks.
  • Screening for illegal drug use prior to assuming position and will be subject to return to duty, post-accident and/or random and reasonable suspicion drug tests while employed with BCSO.
