Serves as lead worker over other mechanics and acts as supervisor in foreman’s absence.
Essential Job Functions
- Serves as lead worker over other mechanics and acts as supervisor in foreman’s absence.
- Diagnoses, repairs and maintains various systems on diesel and gas equipment.
- Performs preventative maintenance and general repair work, following proper diagnostic and troubleshooting in all general automotive areas, including, but not limited to work on: engines, transmissions, differentials, steering and suspension, brakes, clutches, belts, hoses, lights, tires of all sizes, and batteries.
- Maintains an orderly work area.
- Performs inspections and safety checks on vehicles repaired.
- Performs regular preventative maintenance for the Public Works, other departments, and Sheriff's equipment such as new brakes, tune-ups, sing lights, changing filters, etc.
- Overhauls and repairs motors, transmissions, differentials and universal joints, as well as electrical fuel injection, and suspensions on a large variety of vehicles.
- Cleans, washes, and fuels repaired vehicles prior to returning to departments.
- Repairs vehicles in the shop and out in the field, working on priority break-downs first.
- Retrieves stranded vehicles and brings them to the shop for repairs if repairs cannot be completed in the field.
- Completes work records to submit for tracking repairs and maintenance that has been completed.
- Interprets electrical circuits and electrical drawings of vehicles.
- Communicates with other County employees regarding the driving and operation problems of their vehicles.
- Reads manuals and specifications and diagrams to obtain knowledge and familiarity with parts and equipment.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of methods practices, materials, instruments and tools used in equipment maintenance.
- Knowledge of vehicle maintenance.
- Knowledge of safety practices.
- Skill in diagnosing and repairing problems.
- Skill in using diagnostic equipment.
- Skill in using and caring of various tools and equipment.
- Skill in maintaining records and reports.
- Skill in effectively communicating verbally and in writing.
- Skill to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.
Desirable Qualifications
- A High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Three years’ experience in the maintenance and repair of equipment.
- Or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Must possess a valid State of Arizona driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
