Nature and Variety of Work
- Tunes engines, gaps and replaces spark plugs, sets timing; replaces cylinder heads and gaskets; grinds valves; makes service calls.
- Repairs and overhauls transmissions, differentials, front and rear end assemblies; turns brakes rotors and drums.
- Utilizes computerized diagnostic equipment in determining service requirements.
- Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts including brakes, cooling, ignition, electrical, and fuel systems, mufflers, and exhaust pipes.
- Repairs and overhauls generators, carburetors and clutch assemblies; replaces broken axles and springs; replaces hydraulic lines and cylinders.
- Repairs and overhauls air compressors, portable pumps, chain saws, lawn mowers, and other specialized equipment; may do limited welding and blacksmithing work related to repairs.
- Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, diagnostic instruments, and techniques used in the repair of automotive equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Skill in the use and operation of diagnostic equipment, tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.
- Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment.
- Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to interpret and work from service manuals, specifications and diagrams.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Graduation from high or vocational school.
- Experience: Two (2) or more years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment at the full performance level.
- Additional Requirements: Automotive service excellence (ASE) certification as determined by area of assignment. A valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license without air brake restriction.
Supplemental Qualifications
- Preference will be given to candidates that possess the following:
- A valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) without air brake restriction.
- General maintenance and repair of heavy duty trucks and off-road equipment with complex hydraulic systems such as loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, vactors and roll-off trucks.
- Automotive Service Excellence Certifications.
