About the role

Performs skilled diagnostic, repair, and maintenance work on school buses, automobiles, light and medium duty trucks, and related equipment. Assists in major repair work and advanced electronic diagnostics. Inspects school buses, trucks, and cars in accordance with Maryland vehicle laws. Operates buses, trucks, automobiles, and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned of similar scope and complexity.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes automotive malfunctions.
  • Inspects, adjusts, repairs, and replaces various automotive components and systems such as brakes, ignitions, exhaust systems, and suspensions.
  • Maintains logs and reports for maintenance accountability.
  • Makes minor repairs to sheet metal and fiberglass panels.
  • Replaces tires.
  • Repairs tires.
  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance on vehicles.
  • Keeps work areas clean and orderly.
  • Cleans and cares for tools and equipment.
  • Keeps inventoried parts in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Responds to calls for road service.
  • Transports buses to and from breakdown locations.
  • Test drives trucks, buses, automobiles, and equipment to diagnose malfunctions.
  • Drives trucks, automobiles, and buses among the transportation shop locations.
  • Assists in major repair work and advanced electronic diagnostics.
  • Performs other duties of a similar scope and complexity.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent.
  • Two years of experience in skilled automotive and/or truck diagnostic, repair and maintenance work.
  • Class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required at time of employment.
  • A valid commercial, class B Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required within six months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of automotive repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of automotive parts, components, and systems.
  • Knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in automotive repair and maintenance.
  • Skill in automotive and/or truck diagnostic, repair and maintenance work.
  • Skill in the diagnosis of automotive malfunctions.
  • Ability to complete assignments by established deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Physical And Environmental Conditions

  • The work of this class involves frequent walking and standing, lifting and carrying of objects of moderate to heavy weight, and the use of coordinative and manipulative skills in the operation of tools, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Work requires exposure to garage environments that include exposure to dust, dirt, machinery, and equipment.

Salary
