About the role

The Automotive/Heavy Equipment Technician is an essential role, responsible for performing automotive maintenance and services for fleet vehicles, equipment, and apparatus servicing Gwinnett County. This position requires consistent, reliable attendance and may involve work during emergencies, inclement weather, holidays, or other circumstances when normal operations are disrupted.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance services on automobiles and light trucks, including drivability, suspension systems, brake systems, engine, and transmission.
  • Diagnose and repair commercial and diesel vehicles, heavy equipment, and machinery, including troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, reading and understanding hydraulic and electrical schematics, troubleshooting and repairing diesel engines (Cat, Cummins, Detroit), and maintaining routine maintenance schedules on all heavy equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid Georgia driver's license.
  • Commercial Driver’s License within 12 months according to the area of assignment.
  • Two years of experience in mechanical and automotive maintenance, including electrical repair, system diagnosis, installation, and upfitting of various automotive systems.

Qualifications

  • For Level I: Four years of experience in mechanical and automotive maintenance, including electrical repair, system diagnosis, installation, and upfitting of various automotive systems.
  • Four ASE certifications in area of assignment OR any combination of verifiable industry or manufacturer-specific certifications will be considered, at the department's discretion, instead of ASE Certifications when applicable.
  • For Level II: Five years of experience in mechanical and automotive maintenance, including electrical repair, system diagnosis, installation, and upfitting of various automotive systems.
  • ASE Master certification in the area of assignment OR Any combination of verifiable industry or manufacturer-specific certifications will be considered, at the department's discretion, in lieu of ASE Certifications when applicable.

Hiring Salary Range:

  • Level I: $44,968.00 - $71,948.00 ($21.61 - $34.59/hour) - Grade B21(3)
  • Level II: $53,286.00 - $85,258.00 ($25.61 - $40.98/hour) - Grade B23(3)
  • Level III: $63,017.00 - $100,827.00 ($30.39 - $48.47/hour) - Grade B32(3)

Schedule

Four 10-hour shifts from 7:00am-6:00pm (Mon-Thurs or Tue-Fri), with eligibility to work on call as needed. Schedule is subject to change according to business needs.

Other Job Requirements/Information

This job is a safety-sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing. This job may require on-call rotation according to area of assignment.
